As the white caps on the nearby hills are shrinking, outdoor enthusiasts' thoughts are turning more and more to non-frozen watersports, like kayaking.

But if this reporter's experience is anything to learn from, kayaking seems like a much better idea while the kayak is right-side up, something that's trickier than it looks like from the stability of the shore.

So today, if you're of the kayak-minded but kayak-inexperienced set, take the opportunity to get a few pointers on how to enjoy the sport instead of having your first attempt be your last.

Flatwater kayaker Katy McDermott will be teaching a free class on the basics of flatwater kayaking at Sierra Trading Post.

In addition to the class, Sierra Trading Post will be offering 20 percent off all kayaking gear today. That way, if you learn about some sort of life-saving piece of safety gear you didn't hear about at the garage sale where you bought your kayak, you'll be able to pick it up at the same time.

The class is from 5:30-7 p.m. and is free.
