Hundreds of spectators from across the valley filled the streets of downtown Boise for the 25th annual Twilight Criterium Saturday.

“It’s an opportunity to see something unique,” said Eagle resident Glen Lindquist as cyclists flew by on Ninth Street at nearly 30 miles per hour. Lindquist says he’s been to the Twilight Criterium four or five times and enjoys it every time.

The event has attracted the best in the cycling world including Olympic Gold medalist Kristin Armstrong. Armstrong led the childrens’ race earlier in the afternoon, giving local youngsters the chance to ride on a professional course with a Boise hero.

The Twilight Criterium started from a grassroots effort in 1987 to bring premier cycling to the Boise area. Today the race is sanctioned by the U.S. Cycling Federation and the event is on the National Cycling Racing Calendar and on the USA Crit Series tour. The main race lasts for one hour, plus five laps and riders compete for $20,000 in cash and prizes.
