It's an old truism that you have to finish the book before seeing the movie, so it won't color the way you imagine things in some sort of absurd and sensationalist way that "californicates" the source material.
With that in mind, I've been rushing through The Hunger Games trilogy, a task that sent me to three libraries over the weekend trying to find the single available copy of the final book, Mockingjay. The library's other 77 copies were checked out or on hold, and the one I wanted was apparently stolen. But knowing the film is coming out soon—and will star the insufferable Lenny Kravitz—I didn't want to risk any sort of delay, lest it morph the tightly paced post-apocalyptic take on the Roman coliseum into a feature-length music video for American Woman. Yikes.
But from the gritty look of the just-released trailer, there may not be much to worry about. Hunger Game on.
