Evidence shakes the stage

On Dec. 7, Dilated Peoples' boy wonder Evidence laid down tracks off his 2011 album Cats & Dogs, which was part of the fifth-annual How the Grouch Stole Christmas tour. The Reef was jam-packed with eager hip-hop fans, for 10 p.m. on a Wednesday evening.

Evidence, newly embarked on a solo career, played to the crowd between bass-heavy beats spun by DJ Fresh.

"It's your party," Evidence told the crowd, "Can I keep this shit movin'?"

The crowd roared in response.

"I'm gonna do somethin' we only do for live-ass shows; we don't record this."

Evidence proceeded to lay a fresh freestyle down over The Beatles' "Come Together."

While waiting outside before the show, two passionate fans admonished a group of passersby—who scoffed at the price of admission—to pony up and enjoy the show. They told them it was "$14 they'd never forget."
