Boise State Wins A Share of National Title, Right?

Posted by Andrew Mentzer on Tue, Jan 10, 2012 at 11:50 AM

After University of Alabama's Monday night thrashing of the Louisiana State University Pussycats in the lamest BCS National Championship game ever played, the Boise State Broncos now hold claim to at least a share of the crystal football, right?

Here's the breakdown:
Boise State dominated nearly all of its competition this season, including one of the most commanding performances of all the bowl games against PAC-12 punching bag Arizona State. The only exception was a fluke 1-point home loss at the hand of an very talented and opportunistic Texas Christian University team.

Alabama not only lost its conference but also its division (to LSU mind you), and yet, still got the invite to a rematch in New Orleans. I guess national championships are buy five, get one free these days (you can't spell 'cronies' without SEC).

Oklahoma State, Alabama, LSU, University of Houston and Boise State all finished the season with one loss.

Strength of schedule is apparently irrelevant because late in the season Alabama's "impenetrable" defense allowed Division II cupcake Georgia Southern University to hang 21 points on them. This is the same defense that shut out what was supposed to be an unstoppable LSU offense.

I'll say this in plain English: Apples to apples, Georgia Southern's offense is demonstrably superior to that of LSU.

Long story short, there is no way the BCS got it even close to right this season. Between Xs and Os, intangibles and politics, I doubt that anyone feels very good about what college football did to itself in 2011-12.

It's only fair to consider that there is—functionally and legitimately—a five-way tie for the national championship. All hype and ESPN-SEC bias aside, it would be foolish for us as thoughtful and logical human beings to view it any other way.

Congrats Broncos, Elephants, Tigers, Cowboys and Cougars. Another thankless trip to the zoo is in the bag, and as far as I can tell we didn't learn a thing.

Mentzer is in fantasy land thinking that Boise State is half the team with half the schedule of either Bama or LSU. Either of the latter, but especially Bama, would have beaten BS like red-headed step children. Now, Mr. Mentzer, go roll up in the fetal position and cry.

Great read. So true! I did learn one thing though, boycotting "Snorfest II" last night strangely made me feel better this morning. Perhaps if everybody boycotted the bcs we'd finally see the necessary changes in Div. I football (yeah, I know "FCS")?

My son's high school team went undefeated this year. They should have played in the BCS title game.

Alabama,if youthrow out 3 teams that they beat that had winning records, that would leave2 teams with better than 50% records,Boise same thing throw out 3 with winning records, that leaves 5 teams with better than 50%,makes you wonder.....

Nice comic relief, but yes we could would all be better served by a playoff. Well all except for those who are afraid they will lose to a school that they deem not worthy, because of the conference they play in.

Hey John, I would imagine that Kellen Moore could have thrown the ball downfield on 'Bama' all night. LSU failed miserably in the pass game (there was one?).

i'll be perfectly honest. Boise State has no argument for a split nat'l title, im sry. when Boise plays and BEATS 6 top 10 teams (at the time the game took place) and plays in a legitimate bowl against a legitimate opponent (someone in say the ACC or heaven forbid the SEC), then maybe Boise will have a legitimate argument. until then, stop complaining and get a real schedule. btw, my Tigers were undefeated in the regular season, won our conference, and the opponents that we beat in the regular season ALL played in major bowls. so, don't go insulting my Tigers by saying the played like GSU (Georgia Southern University). i'll admit the nat'l 'ship was a snooze (and highly embarrassing), but that aside, we deserved to be top Tigers. come down South, Boise State, we'll show you what a real football game is like. Geaux (pronounced "Go" btw) Tigers!

Could not even beat TCU?! How do you expect to share part of national title when you can't even win your own low-ranking division?? Be happy you got to play a terrible Pac12 team because it could have been really ugly. You got a nice trip to Vegas, shut up!
