The former Donnie Mac's parking lot at 1515 W. Grove St. teemed with luxury cars and sleek SUVs today at the official opening of caterer Lisa Peterson's newest venture, A Tavola. Though the day was a drizzly gray, the inside of the cafe/gourmet foods store/coffee bar was bright and airy, with a familiar Dean and Deluca-esque bustle.
A Tavola features cases filled with take-and-bake items—like tamales, chile relleno burritos and tomato orange soup—along with prepared deserts, artisan meats and cheeses, and a deli teeming with cold salads. Patrons can also order from a small sandwich menu, which includes options like French brie and tomato or house roasted turkey.
The white-washed space is reminiscent of Eataly, Mario Batali's multi-faceted New York City market that has recently taken the food world by storm. Seated at a long wooden table framed by a library of cooking-related books, patrons noshed on creamy salmon bisque, roasted golden beet salad and fleur de sel chocolate chip cookies.
A Tavola will be open from 7:30 a.m. to 7 p.m. daily, except Sundays. You can check out a slideshow of the space here.
