The beginning of the day on May 23 set a busy pace for Boise Mayor Dave Bieter. As he walked into City Hall that morning, he was greeted with news that Exergy Tour Team TIBCO's entire fleet of custom bicycles had been stolen overnight from outside their Holiday Inn lodgings.
Bieter told Boise Weekly he knew how personal losing a bike can be—his bicycle was stolen in Boise from outside Pollo Rey, and it was never returned.
"It was a 40-year-old bike," said Bieter while sipping a beer. "It was like losing a member of the family."
But while Bieter's bike was long gone, all 13 Exergy bikes were found by Boise Police well before the women's cycling competition opened their official presentation of all 16 teams participating in four days of racing.
"I'm just glad we got 'em back," said Bieter.
Bieter and Idaho Gov. C.L. "Butch" Otter talked about the recovery of the bikes while waiting to take the stage at the opening ceremonies. To congratulate the recovery in such quick fashion, Otter fist-bumped Bieter. The two took the stage together to welcome the new competition to Idaho.
