Los Angeles-based singer-songwriter Maia Sharp will grace the Alive After Five stage for the series kickoff on Wednesday, June 6. Performing as a duo with guitarist Linda Taylor, Sharp said the pair sounds more like a band of four.

The daughter of two musically inclined parents who met while singing in a high school band, Sharp grew up surrounded by music. This multi-instrumentalist began her musical career by playing the saxophone and the piano.

“Once I started writing songs, that took over as the first love,” Sharp said.

To keep her sound fresh, Sharp added guitar to her list of talents, and now mixes in a bit of each instrument during her shows.

Sharp got her start playing in L.A. clubs and taking inspiration from artists such as Joni Mitchell, Ricki Lee Jones, Jackson Browne, Annie Lennox and Simon and Garfunkel. Shades of all of these artists contribute to her unique sound, which mixes elements of contemporary folk, jazz, rock and classical genres.

As a songwriter, Sharp has written lyrics for bands like The Dixie Chicks, Bonnie Raitt, Trisha Yearwood, David Wilcox, Cher, Lisa Loeb, Edwin McCain, Keb' Mo' and Art Garfunkel, among others. Recently, Raitt recorded three of Sharp’s songs, which led Sharp to perform with and record background vocals for Raitt, one of her all-time favorite artists.

Local high-school alternative rock power trio Workin' on Fire will open for Sharp. Since their first gig in 2009, the boys in Workin’ on Fire have performed more than 150 shows in Idaho, Oregon and Washington.
