The Smoke Inn Will Close After 45 Years

The Smoke Inn opened in 1967 at 3912 W. State St., selling burgers and finger steaks. In 1992, Jay Liles took over the business from his father. And this Friday, June 15, after 45 years, the business will close.

Liles said business slowed down a few years ago and never picked up again.

“The economy has just finally taken its toll,” Liles said.

As for what to do with the rest of the remaining inventory, Liles is still trying to figure that out. He may give it to employees, send what he can back to his brokers and sell the rest.

Liles, 54, said he doesn’t plan to open another business.

“I’ll probably be looking for work like everyone else,” he said.

Liles added that many of his customers aren’t happy to see the restaurant close.

“Tell them to come in and get their favorite sandwich or turkey nuggets before we close up,” Liles said.

The restaurant will be open until 6 p.m. on Friday, June 15.
