Boise State Prepares to Launch New Era With Joe Southwick as QB

Posted By on Mon, Aug 27, 2012 at 9:13 AM

Get to know th name Joe Southwick. The Boise State Junior was officially named Boise State's new quarterback over the weekend, and he'll make his debut on a big stage: this Friday's nationally televised season opener at Michigan State.

Southwick, 6-foot-1, 187 pounds, hails from Danville, Calif., where he played for San Ramon Valley High School. Southwick took snaps in eight games during the 2010 season and eight more in 2011.

Boise State Coach Chris Petersen picked Southwick from a field of four candidates, including sophomore Grant Hedrick and freshmen Jimmy Laughrea and Nick Patti.

Southwick follows in the cleats of some pretty impressive Bronco quarterbacks: Bart Hendricks, Ryan Dinwiddie, Jared Zabransky, Taylor Tharp and Kellen Moore.

Meanwhile, Moore is busy trying to win a job with the Detroit Lions. Moore's final preseason game with the Lions is this Thursday, Aug. 30, one day before the Bronco play at Michigan State.

"Absolutely. After our game," Moore told Boise Weekly, when asked if he'd be on hand for the season opener. "Titus [Young] and I may jet up to Lansing, Mich., to watch the Broncos. That could be a lot of fun."
