When you have an early wake-up call to catch an 8 a.m. movie, I don't recommend attending too many showings of Midnight Madness, which usually don't get you back home until 3 a.m. That is, unless they're screening Seven Psychopaths, the guiltiest of guilty pleasures, featuring the best script of the year and the quirkiest cast: Colin Farrell, Christopher Walken, Sam Rockwell and Woody Harrelson.

The Toronto International Film Festival's Midnight Madness showcase usually debuts horror and zombie movies (or some other crazy shit). Seven Psychopaths fits the bill perfectly. In fact, writer-director Martin McDonagh out-Tarantinos even Quentin himself with a violent, obscene but wickedly delightful menagerie.

McDonagh, who successfully teamed with Farrell for the film In Bruges, inspires brilliant comic performances from his cast, and Walken is better than he has been in years.

I attended Seven Psychopaths with a Toronto theater packed with fans roaring in approval. It's one of the festival's big hit surprises so far.
