A legend limped his way through Boise Monday night: hit songwriter, producer, XXX parody artist and pioneering rapper Blowfly.
Dragging his stiff leg and clad in his signature gold superhero-of-smut jumpsuit and mask, 73-year-old singer Clarence Reid, aka Blowfly, was lead by the arm through the Red Room dance floor by a bartender.
"Blowfly just made up a song about my mom's pussy in the back," she said, adding that the song wasn't factually accurate.
The parade of pussy puns pushed onwards when Blowfly took the stage.
"There's many ways to fuck the boss: with your finger, your hand or the dick of a horse," he sang in a song about how to get ahead in business.
"She's got more ass than a puppet," he sang in another. (That one's a bit of a thinker, but it will come to you eventually.)
After that, he directed the ladies of the audience to pay attention to his crotch.
"I know what you're saying," he said. "Blowfly, you a lying motherfucker. You don't have 84 feet of dick."
Then he sang a song claiming otherwise.
The oddest moments of the show were bits of between-song dialog between drummer Tom Bowker and Reid, which toed the line between groan-worthy banter and steering a raunchy aging person back to the setlist.
Blowfly's formula is simple: Funk and smut. It's been working for decades, and there isn't much point in shifting gears now, especially as he's experiencing something of a resurgence in the underground scene that he nourished in the '60s and '70s. The Red Room wasn't sold out, but there was a strong showing of dedicated fans. Some even finished his "ABCs of Pussy," knowing that Z is the only place you should never stick your dick. Why? Because it stands for zombie pussy, obviously.
Though Bowker may have helped resurrect Reid's career as a manager, his drumming was lackluster and definitely not in the league of the frontman. But Blowfly's rhythmic bark kept the timing tight enough to compensate.
Still, it was the best type of terrible.
It takes a special kind of person to pull off an act like Blowfly's. With Reid's voice like a freshly graveled road and stained fingernails like madness-sharpened talons, there is no question that he's the genuine article.
But for anyone concerned that Reid isn't remotely repentant for being such a dirty old man, you're dead wrong. He apologized from the stage.
"Sorry, God," he said. "But I had to butt-fuck her."
