Reuters Examines Superstorm Sandy Animal Rescue

In the panic of a natural disaster family pets can sadly get left behind to weather the storm on their own. And while they aren't the first priority for first responders, they are the first priority of special animal rescuers with the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals who do search and rescue operations for pets.

The issue was explored in-depth concerning the animals left behind in Hurricane Katrina in the 2006 documentary Dark Water Rising.
