A Simple Cup of Coffee, A Beautiful Gift

This morning—as I do every Wednesday morning on my way back to the office after visiting with Ken and Tim on 94.9 The River—I swung by Big City Coffee to grab a cup of coffee and breakfast. But this morning, I not only got some much needed caffeine but I had the chance to witness a simple, yet beautiful gesture of community.

It turns out a gentleman who came in earlier in the morning had purchased 26 cups of coffee for fellow patrons in honor of the victims of the tragic school shooting in Newtown, Conn., on Dec. 14.

It may seem simple, especially when so far removed from the scene of the event. But as many of us have struggled to understand how someone could possibly take the lives of innocent children, and grieved alongside the families whose pain is something I hope few of us will ever experience, it's simple acts that mean the most.

It's a renewed sense of community, compassion and charity that is helping the residents of that Connecticut town get by, and it's something we could all benefit from. That's why I'm so appreciative of a simple cup of coffee—it has not only made me stop and reflect, but think of what small things I could do to brighten the day of others.

So, thank you, mysterious coffee donor, this is probably the best cup of coffee I've ever had.
