R.E.M. Gets a New Religion: A Major Scale

Digital audio editing can work wonders. For example, we all know it can make pretty people sing pretty. But it can also make pretty singing a totally different kind of pretty.

A Vimeo user called Major Scaled has been taking infamously somber tunes and digitally reworking them to be in major keys.

The latest is R.E.M.'s "Losing My Religion," which, once converted to a major key, becomes unexpectedly heart-warming. It's the biggest tone-shift since Major Scaled's "Nothing Else Matters" by Metallica, which went from an anguished moan to something between baroque guitar and an '80s power ballad.
