When it comes to strong film heroines, Clarice Starling from Silence of the Lambs and Ellen Ripley from Alien come to mind. Unfortunately, neither of these movies are particularly family friendly.

One of the movies that makes our list of films featuring a dynamic heroine while simultaneously being fit for kids is Brave (PG), the story of Scottish princess Merida, who must reconcile her desire for self-determination with the need to lift a beastly curse she laid on her mother.

The film, another hit from Disney/Pixar, is playing at 2 p.m. today at the Library at Cole and Ustick. Admission is free.
