The Boise State University Abraxans Quidditch team won four matches and lost two in this weekend's first-ever Brooms on the Blue tournament. The Abraxans B team won one match and lost three.

Six teams—Boise State's A and B teams, University of Arizona, Western Wahington Wyverns, University of Utah Crimson Flyers and a mercenary team comprising members of the University of Idaho Manticores, Crimson Flyers and others—competed for glory over two days. This was the Abraxans' first time hosting an International Quidditch Association-sanctioned tournament.

"It was a fantastic success and, I believe, really showed the Quidditch community what Boise State is capable of," wrote organizer Kym Couch in an email.

Matches were played at the Franklin Turf April 26 and on the blue turf of Bronco Stadium April 27.

In January, Boise Weekly first told readers about the Abraxans, Boise State's Quidditch team. The sport is derived from the fictional sport described in J.K. Rowling's Harry Potter young adult fantasy novels. Gameplay is a combination of dodgeball and basketball, with players keeping brooms between their legs at all times. At the beginning of the spring semester, the Abraxans numbered 12-14 regularly participating players. Since then, the team has grown to 44 players—enough for Boise State to fill two teams.

"We've worked really hard to advertise well and stress the fact that we are not a nerd club, we are a sports team," wrote Couch.
