Just a few blocks east of St. Luke's on East McKinley Street is an old one-story Queen Anne house that has been doubled in size and completely remodeled, including new electric, plumbing, heating and air conditioning. The visitor climbs up original sandstone steps to a lovely screened front porch to face the massive wood front door with Speak Easy security opening. The large living room is floored in dark walnut and features two big windows and a ceiling fan. To the rear, a hallway leads to a first bedroom, also featuring an oversized old-fashioned window, and a hall bathroom with a tub, shower and tile/granite countertop.
The substantial kitchen looks brand new, as does the entire house. To the front lies an elegant formal dining room with white paneled wainscoting, white crown molding, a beautiful dining room lamp and a bay window. All the lamps in the house are in an elaborate decorative style, and the interior paneled doors are solid wood. The alder custom cabinets in the kitchen feature granite, under-counter lights, crown molding and plant shelves. There are three windows over the dark stainless, under-counter sink; all the appliances are Bosch; the stove is gas. The fixtures in the kitchen and the bathroom are all Gerber and Kohler, and of a brushed brownish color. Just beyond a breakfast bar lies an informal eating area, the breakfast nook.
A second bedroom—even bigger than the first—is located at the back of the house. Double doors lead to the great big master bedroom featuring three windows and a ceiling fan. This room leads to a walk-in closet with a window and tons of built-ins, and then connects to a posh master bath. You can soak in the garden tub; shower in the big shower; wash in either of the two sinks. Here, again, the finishes are tile and granite, with some elegant glass tile accents. The windows in the house are the size of the original windows, but are new Andersen wood windows. The walls are painted a rosy tan with white trim. The house is wired for surround sound and cable. Except for the living room, all the ceilings are nine feet high.
Also off the back hall is a generously sized utility room with a window and storage cabinets. This house is plumbed for central vacuum, and the hookup is here.
A door from the utility room leads to the back of the house: first to a black, concrete textured patio. This area and the side and the front of the corner lot are beautifully landscaped with bushes, perennials, trees and a new lawn. In a bed by the patio is a solid stone bubble fountain, which I would leave on all night so I could listen as I lay in bed. On the alley is a brand new, finished, oversized (23-foot by 23-foot) two-car garage, with two doors and two garage door openers. There are several mature pines, maples and other trees on this corner property, providing lovely shade. McKinley Street, and in fact the whole East End, has parking strips along the streets, which adds graciousness to a neighborhood. Of course, the lot has an automatic sprinkler system. The light brown exterior siding is made of old cedar and new cedar as the house is in a Historic District, and this is required. The foundation of the old 1900 house is sandstone, but the new parts are concrete. The hipped roof is newly shingled in red, and the few small gable ends feature the original Victorian gingerbread shingles.
Pros: What a complete remodel. This is essentially a brand new house with Victorian charm. I'd love to give dinner parties worthy of the elegant dining room. I love the many windows above the kitchen sink. The finishes are elegant, and the bedrooms range from well-sized to downright large. The back patio is inviting, and the screened front porch is original to the house and so useful in these days of West Nile Virus.
