    Deremembrance of things past
When last we visited with Red, he was deep into enunciation therapy, a prerequisite to completing a comeback as my sidekick. For several weeks, he was making great strides, I thought.

President maintains 'right' to kill American citizens
Obama could still personally order a government agency to murder you. That's not as weird as the fact that you probably don't care enough to do anything.

We Can't Make Afghans Accept Karzai Now
We've been in Afghanistan longer than any other war in American history ... Yet we still haven't altered the flawed strategy that allowed uneducated tribesmen with outdated weapons to defeat us year after year.

  • Postcards from Hell

A two-week series about the year-long Iraq tour of the Idaho 116th Brigade Combat Team
Capt. Kory Turnbow of the Idaho National Guard was nearly blown to bits in his first week in Iraq. The 29-year-old law student and Pullman resident is not alone in having had a close encounter with an improvised explosive device (IED). Every local soldier who spent 2005 in Iraq with the Idaho National Guard has a bomb story. All are as intense as Turnbow's, and in almost every case, the bombers were never caught. There were a lot more bombs than we've heard about.

  • Ain't Our Fault

Batters up in the blame game
As everything the opposition predicted about Iraq comes true--the endless insurgency, the rise of theocratic rule, the rise in Iranian influence, the squandering of American resources, the squandering of American prestige, the squandering of American soldiers, the civil war no one dares to call a civil war, the civilian slaughter, the chaos that spreads across the Middle East like a plague from an ancient time--I'm throwing myself into the briar patch here by making yet another prediction. It's a habit I generally prefer to steer clear of--predicting. On paper, at least. As those in the Bush administration should know by now--but probably don't since they seem incapable of learning anything new--there's nothing that can haunt your future quite like a past prediction.

    Bush-Cheney traitors deserve prison, impeachment
To weigh the outing of CIA agent Valerie Plame against historical standards, consider that no leader of the Soviet Union--including that master of ruthlessness, Josef Stalin--ever arranged for the name of a KGB operative to appear in a newspaper. Adolf Hitler had countless millions murdered, yet getting at a political enemy by endangering agents of the Sicherheitsdienst, the Nazi intelligence service, didn't cross his mind. In this respect, not even the worst tyrants have stooped to the level of George W. Bush.

  • GWB & FDR: SEPARATED AT BIRTH

    Two radicals, adored and reviled
NEW YORK--"I will never buy Time again." So swore several of my friends upon hearing that George W. Bush had been named its "Man of the Year." I explained that the designation is less of an award than a recognition of an individual's importance, that Henry Luce wasn't sucking up to Hitler when he named the German tyrant for the same honor in 1938. "This is worse," one wrote, "because Hitler was merely evil. Bush is stupid as well."

  • IF IT'S 2005, IT MUST BE TIME FOR ANOTHER WAR

Bushies gear up for invading Iran
NEW YORK--You've heard this song before. There's this country, see, and they hate America. They'd nuke us if they had the chance, you bet they would. Damn Muslim religious fanatics! Guess what? They have weapons of mass destruction! Either that or their scientists are about to develop them. Whatever--we can't let that happen. We've gotta hit them before they hit us! What's that? Of course we're sure! Our intelligence says so. Huh? No. We can't show you the proof. We'll say this much ... a little bird told us. A little exiled bird that wants to run the country after we overthrow the current regime. They wouldn't lie, and neither would we. And while we're at it, can we borrow your son for the next few years?
