Re: “Oscar-Nominated Leviathan Is Ruffling Russian Feathers

Russia is like the nation which might have been. The commie delay was at least 70 years... and now a genuine goon is in charge. Please do not mistake the Russian people with the Russian leadership goons.

Re: “Portlandia: The White Subcultural Equivalent of a Minstrel Show

You really should have rethought this before you published it. Portlandia is a lot like a lot of things but minstrel show ain't one of em. Whomever is the editor at BW either didn't see this before it went live or is equally out of touch with the difference between a minstrel show and PORTLANDIA. I live in Portland but have spent much time in Boise and am usually stoked on BW articles but this is just a malformed hypothesis that doesn't hold up to the level of quality in journalism Im used to from BW.

To put it bluntly: the main difference between the two is that Portland is thriving because of Portlandia, and African Americans suffered because of minstrel shows. Portlandia is a symbol of Portlands achievements in entrepreneurial endeavors and stance on progressive politics while minstrel shows were cruel jokes meant to shame and insult an entire race of humans. Portlandia is a love letter to Portland while Minstel shows were kind of a hate letter to African Americans. If anything Portlandia is kinda the opposite of a minstel show...

The comparison is ludicrous and ill thought through. It's not like reprehensible or gonna make me stop reading BW, it's just immature and ignorant and has no place in such a fine publication.

Regarding the "LBJ controversy" - you will recall that LBJ was a Democrat, and every thinking person knows that only Republicans are racists! /sarcasm

Re: “When a Patient's Death is Broadcast Without Permission

I just wrote a letter to ABC. We should all go to their website and take them to task for such repugnant practices. Go here:

A) who cares
B) who are you?

Re: “Sony Demands Halt to Reporting of Leaked Documents

Sony's mindless and unfunny assassination comedy "The Interview" wil not be appearing in movie theaters. You all know why. Korea is very close to Japan, and the threats of an attack on the scale of 9/11 should not be ignored.

Sony's demands are too funny! Admit it, Sony. You have lost this one.

Re: “A Fly-Fishing Film For People Who Don't Fly Fish (And People Who Do)

I used to fly fish in my native Montana, even before it became popular with the movie, "A River Ran Through It'. Now, based on a recent Boise Weekly editor's comments, I realize I have a new role in life on Social Media: Crankster, though I aspire to Gadfly. If they don't arrest and disappear me first. Thankfully, I think I have evolved beyond Troll. I doubt I am a Pundit, as no one pays me to write, and most people pay no attention. But it's all a matter of opinion, and the Holy Qur'an prohibits compulsion in matters of opinion, belief or faith. So I trust in God to sort it all out. Eventually. Inshallah. Life allowing. Or perhaps, I may fly fish again the Boise River for whitefish. Probably better for the economy and my mental health. If I don't slip and drown... Hmm, Liguid Laughs bar instead may be safer.

Re: “The Homesman: Strong and Multi-faceted, But Homeless

As a historian especially the early years of Idaho, I have become acquainted with the homeless man who was not a sterling example of success. But without their efforts this country might not be what it is. I would also sate that Jesus was homeless but no one has impacted the planet like He has.

Re: “Citizenfour: Traitor or Patriot?

Motive is another thing conspicuously missing from Citizenfour. Snowden has a hot girlfriend, a good paying cushy job, and an address in paradise. Are we to believe he’s just one big charitable guy to give all this up in order to show us some PowerPoint slides? You all know Russia and China spy on us too, right?

His name is curious too; Edward Joseph Snowden. In Joseph Heller’s book Catch-22, Snowden is a character whose death serves as a catalyst to sway the opinion of the protagonist away from the war profiteers.

Often times in the news, Snowden is credited as being an analyst. In Citizenfour, he confirms to being an IT guy for Booz-Allen. (Computer locked up? Can’t set up your printer? Call a guy like Snowden.) He even admits to having no ‘need to know’, so what was he doing snooping through peoples files?

Within two weeks of starting his job in Hawaii, Snowden created a data breach larger than what any one person could possibly review. I’d call that a calculated, well planned tactical strike.

Re: “Citizenfour: Traitor or Patriot?

As for the filmmaking, there are: static shots, subjects that leave the frame, dead air, real time chat correspondence; it’s a snoozer.

This documentary is severely biased to its unvetted single source. At no point do Poitras or Greenwald document how they determined the veracity of Snowden. Do they typically trust every unsolicited email they receive?

Edward Snowden violated national security; did we need a whole movie to affirm this?

Did Snowden release anything relevant? It’s been widely reported that even local law enforcement can research cell phone usage in connection with vehicle accidents. If one phone can be collected on, they all can be.

Snowden states he is an employee of Booz-Allen, yet during the Brian Williams interview, he says he worked for the CIA. Personally, I think he may be employed by the Russian Federation.

When Snowden stated that he has no media experience, my gut smelled a lie. His voice has a listenable inflection and he is very coherent and camera aware. Does Citezenfour have a blooper reel?

Regardless of what you think of him, Ed Snowden is a production. I don’t see this documentary as an example of responsible journalism.

Re: “Birdman: Michael Keaton Flies High

Despite the rave reviews, and slew of '4 stars,' a friend of mine just saw this movie over the weekend and said "save your money" "don't waste your time." Probably just like a few years ago when Brad Pitt's "Tree of Life" came out, and was lauded by the critics, but generally 'hated' as 'simply awful' by the public. I did see that one, and must say that it was one of 'the worst' films I ever did see.
