A commenter on "The Spokesman Review" article cited above wrote this: "And we know how Gov Otter loves to reward his campaign supporters...think Century Link, ENA and the IEN fiasco as well as the private prisons deal."

Otter has struck again.

Re: “UPDATE: Otter Vetoes Cannabis Oil Bill

Another quote, from Union Gap Washington's Director of Public Safety:

"I figured there would be problems. But it’s just been fairly normal from the get-go."

http://www.tri-cityherald.com/2014/11/27/3…

Basically, Idaho's marijuana policies are being driven by fear, and fear is perhaps the single biggest impediment to sound judgement and good decision-making.

From a recent poll, only 17% of the U.S. has any interest at all in consuming marijuana, but over 55% support adult use of marijuana. (And over 85% support medical use of marijuana.)

More and more Americans are simply realizing that marijuana prohibition hasn't changed anything. The marijuana supply and demand are both still here, after 40 years and a trillion dollars. All we've gotten for that money is the most massive prison population in the entire world.

Idaho needs to realize these facts, too... there's a citizen's initiative currently collecting signatures to do just that:

Re: “UPDATE: Otter Vetoes Cannabis Oil Bill

As far as this being a "slippery slope toward the legalization of marijuana", I'd like to note that more than half of the U.S. lives where marijuana is either decriminalized, legalized for medical use or legalized for adult use. Idaho is the exception here, not the rule.

Here's what Colorado governor Hickenlooper (who opposed Colorado's marijuana legalization) said after it had been on sale in legal shops for 6 months:

"It seems like the people that were smoking before are mainly the people that are smoking now. If that’s the case, what that means is that we’re not going to have more drugged driving, or driving while high. We’re not going to have some of those problems. But we are going to have a system where we’re actually regulating and taxing something, and keeping that money in the state of Colorado… and we’re not supporting a corrupt system of gangsters."

Re: “Video: Northern Idaho Wedding Chapel Moves Forward With Federal Lawsuit

Oh, brother. They are sueing because the city didn't do a darn thing to them? Nor did anyone else? Neither are gay marriages legal in Idaho? Did people from all over the country send them 85,000.00 for discriminating against a gay couple? In my 56 years of life, people have gone competely crazy.

Well I should hope the driver who ran in to the side of Popeye's was distracted or had some kind of excuse!
I don't know that I have ever seen a restaurant in my lane of traffic!

Re: “Port of Lewiston's Main Container Shipper Pulls Up Anchor in Portland

My quibble for today: Shouldn't the last line in the article read "down the" rather than "up the." Even though the rivers in question take the products north on the map, Portland is downstream from Lewiston.

Re: “City Under Construction: Mayor Breaks Ground on Another Downtown Development

Gentrification is just the fin above the water. Below is the rest of the shark: a new American economy in which most of us will be poorer, a few will be far richer, and everything will be faster, more homogenous and more controlled or controllable.

Given that the human scaled potential for downtown Boise was eliminated, when the uber-governmental monstrosity that is the capitol building dominated the skyline, it’s inevitable that this sort of faux big-city development would occur once the development parasites began to smell the profits they could siphon off.

The relentless progression to third world economic status, with a tiny minority of economic parasites at the top of an ever-increasing number of poor, has led to the funneling of investment funny-money into this sort of ostentatious project, designed for this tiny minority as the new form of gated community in an urban setting, free from the riff-raff increasingly living in squalor in the suburban and rural wastelands.

As the economy continues to deteriorate, this urban migration of the economic parasites will increase, since they will only feel safe where there is total control of their environment, protecting them from those that they’re using to generate their wealth.

Re: “Education Is Not a Crime... Unless You Are Baha’i

RE: Watchers above comment
Your observations are highly subjective. Have you ever lived in Iran? Have you ever worshipped God in any way? It's good that at least you agree that everyone deserves an education. Is it plausible to lump all religious people into one group? Would you do the same with all atheists? If religion is a hoax who is laughing? Everyone is free to believe in God or not. Perhaps you could look a little deeper. If nothing else the Baha'is are willing to live or die for what they believe. Are your words spoken from your heart? If so, I suppose you are brave to voice them. If not why try to ridicule something you don't understand?

Thank you so much for arranging this.
Thank you Mayors de Weerd and Bieter for recognizing this day for us!

Re: “City Under Construction: Mayor Breaks Ground on Another Downtown Development

Mayor Bieter, 26 housing units won't help you much in reaching your goal of 1,000 new units in downtown Boise by 2,020. At the prices given in the article, however, they will go quite some distance towards making Boise's downtown one of the priciest in the country. As it is now, most of the people who work downtown, especially those who provide services to the bars, restaurants, and hotels and those who do the clerical work of state government can't afford to live anywhere near where they work. How about showing us some plans for affordable housing. Ten-foot ceilings are for people with big heads, I guess.

Re: “Cannabis Oil Bill Passes Idaho House Committee

Idaho still teaches "Reefer Madness" and 1970's propaganda in schools and court ordered drug classes! It's not the country folk (most of Idaho is rural), as much as the Mormon presence in that state. Hello IF!! Wake up and vote them out and put anyone in that is not toting church affiliation as a reason to vote for them! Last time I checked mixing church and state is forbidden!!
