ALEC is a pay-to-play operation where corporations buy a seat and a vote on ‘task forces’ to advance their legislative wish lists and get a tax break for donations, passing these lobbying costs on to taxpayers.
Corporations fund almost all of ALEC's operations.
More than 98% of ALEC's revenues come from sources other than legislative dues, such as corporations, corporate trade groups, and corporate foundations.
ALEC describes itself as a non-partisan, non-profit organization. The facts show that it currently has one Democrat out of 104 legislators in leadership positions.
The organization boasts 2,000 legislative members and 300 or more corporate members. Unelected corporate representatives (often registered lobbyists) sit as equals with elected representatives on nine task forces where they have a “voice and a vote” on model legislation.
Although ALEC claims to take an ideological stance (of supposedly "Jeffersonian principles of free markets, limited government, federalism, and individual liberty"), many of the model bills benefit the corporations whose agents write them, shape them, and/or vote to approve them.
ALEC makes old-fashioned lobbying obsolete.
Once legislators return to their state with corporate-sponsored ALEC legislation in hand, the legislators themselves become “super-lobbyists” for ALEC’s corporate agenda, eliminating the middleman.
Bill…….What’s particularly interesting about this enlightened group of ‘compassionate conservative public servants’ is that that they often believe in the survival of the fittest, based on their idea of what ‘fit’ is, when it comes to their own personal concerns, while at the same time many of them claim to be staunch Christians, which espouses the idea that a Christian must demonstrate the principle that ‘I am my brother’s keeper’.
Can you say hypocrites?
These people are so obsessed with a hyper-focus on ‘Me, My, Mine’ that their level of awareness is compressed down to only that which they can physically grasp and actively control.
This ends up subjecting everyone around them to the lowest common denominator of awareness when these narrow-minded individuals make policy affecting the entire state.
Since the U.S. has been steadily devolving into Idiocracy for quite some time now, the result is apparently widespread arrested development and devolving awareness, as demonstrated by these elected representatives, chosen by the majority of voters, who also obviously suffer from this de-evolution.
As this devolution continues there will undoubtedly be increasing extremes of distorted thinking that will lead to even more demented decisions by the demented voters’ representatives.
If at all possible ... Keep the relationship with your grandparents. No need to be involved with toxic parents!
John…….The Bakken production will most definitely be looked back on as a costly flash in the pan, while the Bakken destruction of poisoned water tables and poisoned lands will remain for decades…..at best.
This desperate, destructive attempt to boost investment returns beyond ZIRP rates, while boosting domestic oil production, is just one of many signs that America’s Happy Motoring culture is rapidly drawing to a close, along with America’s Happy Consumer Culture.
ZIRP destroyed the most fundamental index in the financial universe: the true cost of borrowing money. In doing so, it twerked and torqued the concept of “risk” so badly that risk no longer had any meaning.
Thus, investment fantasies such as the Bakken Fantasyland.
You can only fool reality so long. Eventually risk-on returns for real and swipes the ground with its mighty tail.
As for the Saudis……..They’re locked in a struggle with Iran for the control of the OPEC cartel, and the two countries now are playing a game of chicken over prices, with resulting adverse effects on the economies of Russia and Venezuela, which US globalists are only too happy to witness.
And so…….Desperate attempts to keep the Petro-dollar alive continue……………
But for how much longer?
"Would they still refuse to tax the very people who can afford more taxes, even if it meant we lost our status as a first-world nation, because their obedience to the regal rich is stronger than any lingering sense of duty they feel to the rest of us?"
in a word, bill: "YUP"
Bill…….Instead of spending tax dollars to maintain the infrastructure in the US, those tax dollars are distributed to the private military/industrial corporations, who bankroll their government puppets and make huge profits at taxpayer expense, while their products are ultimately used to control economies and/or destroy infrastructure in other countries.
This occurs regardless of which political gang has hijacked congress.
And this also occurs because the majority of the citizens, whether Republicrat or Demublican in ‘the land of the free’, support this looting as long as they’re in on the take in some way, shape or form…..or…..they’re sufficiently brainwashed into supporting US military invasions to ‘Maintain Our Freedom…..blah, blah, blah.’
With few exceptions, the Gang of 535 is wholeheartedly in on this theft of tax dollars, while the voters continue to reelect most of these criminals, term after term, with the nation’s infrastructure continuing to deteriorate.
This is a prime example of citizens getting the government they deserve.
If they vote to have their tax dollars used to rape other countries of their resources and wealth, then the result is the disintegration of their homeland infrastructure……..and ultimately the destruction of their homeland economy.

Great advice Miss Minerva :) I agree completely. Blood is thicker than water but sometimes water flows smoother. It is nice to have both family and friends to lean on for support but in some cases family tends to cause more of a breakdown then the initial problem.
I say, go with your gut. If you feel that it is an unhealthy environment for your child, let go. A lot of things change when another's wellbeing becomes your main focus.
Great advice! It's hard when kids are involved but you don't want the kid to be another person being controlled. That would be one too many people being controlled by two people. Great job Minerva... Look forward to your next nugget of wisdom.
Family is more than DNA. There are people I share blood with that I do not consider family. There are also people that I am not related to that ARE my family.
Clever writing by the author. However, no empirical evidence to support your position. Next time post your financial analysis of exploration, drilling, completion and production activities so all can see the economic reality of resource development in the Bakken. Further, post your broader economic model that demonstrates the "red" you refer to and prove out your hypothesis on a broken economic model you call "fracking" and the impact (positive or negative) it has had and will have on the U.S. and global economy. Good luck and enjoy your next flight that is propelled and fueled by the same energy you bash above. Unless of course, your flying in a glider propelled by wind lift and thermals.
Great advice! I love reading these! You're the best, Minerva.
If only you knew what you were talking about. Flying over a place doesn't imbue you with knowledge about what is happening there.
this little planet is doing just fine. It has been thru these swings many times. reverse polarization anyone? what we want is a nice place to live. screw you and yours just keep my place cozy. over 90% of everything that has ever lived here is now extinct. We think we are special but we are so mistaken. we can't or won't adapt. we will over time cease to exist. how do I know this? Well, I heard it through the grapevine we're just about to lose our time. honey honey ya.
Cope, don't forget to give special mention to the Riggins Redneck who voted against the bill.
Cope, there are dead-beat moms, too. Just wanted to insert that into the discussion. There are moms who do not meet their child-support obligations.
That said, I would like to insert this comment: The crap-sack Representative from Riggins, to use your language, is a prick with ears. A shame and a cryin' shame. Lock him up in his log cabin!!
Idaho so benefits from it's rivers, snowpack, and huge Snake River Aquafer. I'm no fan of J.R. Simplot but he did know business!
Bill……Your addiction to Letterman explains a lot.
Maybe this is a good time to turn off your TV and stop subjecting your mind to its damaging effects.
Soaking up all of the pablum that shows such as Letterman’s is designed to feed the masses, along with the consumer spots, which are the primary reason television technology was mass produced for public consumption, has clearly taken its toll on you.
When you’re drowsy, late at night, is the best time for television’s sleep teaching to have its strongest effect on your mind. Toss in a few laughs and the effect is enhanced.
Add a glib yuckster and it’s a splendid time to manufacture consent in the oblivious subjects. That’s why these tools are so well paid by their puppet-masters.
Your addictive withdrawal looks like it could be strong, but tough it out and don’t watch any TV for, say, six months or a year.....NONE.
You’ll notice fairly quickly how much your thinking and beliefs have been controlled by the herd mentality that’s perpetrated through repetition on these shows.
It will get easier to spot TV induced indoctrination, whenever it shows up in others.
As a bonus, your columns will improve.
If they are my friends, they'll know better than to ask me to bring a homemade cake.
John…….This is a textbook example of how much safer and easier it is to follow the herd in one’s thinking. It’s the same kind of thinking that led to the slaughtering of millions around the world.
The evidence is clear. The discussion is closed. Doubters are wrong. End of story.
You almost made the leap out of this mental trap with “These wildcards screw up the parameters of climate studies”, but missed the key, deliberately ignored (ignore-ant), wildcards, that are the extreme planetary fluctuations in global warming and carbon dioxide levels as well as the solar fluctuations that heavily impact this earth.
Unfortunately, you’ve fallen for and adopted the arrogance that is normally associated with those who want to believe that they are in control of their domain to the point where they will ignore or destroy anything that might thwart that control.
As a result, you completely ignore the goal of these controllers to tighten their grip on the world population through forced austerity, deprivation, starvation, depopulation, or any other tactic that allows them to continue to be in control.
Ask yourself….Who actually benefits from this supposed ‘scientific consensus’ and the increased control that results?
And Who Actually Loses?
I would prefer a cake that Gerrard Butler would jump out of. A Butlercream cake if you will...
