Like it or not, another reason that U of I's enrollment has been dropping steadily is due to the surge of BSU, yes, because of their football team's celebrity. Plus, Moscow is really quite remote with poor air travel options. Boise has an edge with their multiple benefits such as air travel, cultural options, river, sports, recreation, etc.
I guess this joke of a columnist doesn't realize how much of the legislature, SBOE and others that affect the decisions made are GOP members with UI degrees. Your own alumni and administration have always been a major part of the problem. That is why long ago, now, and forevermore the vast majority of really smart students head out of state for college. Idaho (the state) is a joke. For the record Cope, UI enrollment has been on a downward trend for decades, with a slight bump during the Hoover years. It's not just the stupidity of those outside the university who are responsible for this. The last thing the university needs is more vandal-to-vandal-head-in-the-sand idiots like you running the place. The glory years are gone and they are not coming back. It is your attitude and alumni like you that turn every non-vandal off and not want to help. Seeing the vast majority of the state has absolutely no ties to your university, you might want to think about that for awhile.
Every day is a holiday and every meal is a feast.
I think the legislature wants higher ed to go the way of pre school. No funding, no sympathy, no support. I suppose they expect everyone to work at call centers. I expect the brain drain to other states has a lot to do with the lack of intellect in the legislature. Well, that and inbreeding among the ruling class.
A friend from high school who teaches nuclear medicine at a Texas university really wanted to return to Idaho and interviewed at U of I. He loved Moscow and was prepared to take a pay cut but was appalled at what they could offer. With a family, he could not justify the move.
As long as Idaho is controlled by a single faction of one political party with a distain for intellectual diversity and a bias toward "training" rather than true education, nothing will change. U of I grad 1970
More like idiotic lawyers... Definite good post :) I used to go to U of I and grew up in the Boise area, so it would be nice to see a president who cares!
Even if you disagree with what Snowden did, which I don't, there will be SOMETHING the government does or an agency does that you would definitely disagree with. Only now, you will never hear about it.
The government did EXACTLY what they wanted to do: Make sure NO whistleblowers ever come forth.
Boise is where all the mediocre lawyers end up? You have absolutely no idea what you're talking about.
Bikeboy- Thanks! I have one in my hand now(got the helmet mount also). Will fit it up.
As interesting as Snowden is--and for the record, this "he's a coward" bullshit is completely unwarranted considering the treatment Bradley Manning is getting at the moment--it's not the issue.
Snowden himself has become the red herring. He's secured his little place in history. Good for him. The issue we should be discussing is what we're going to do now that it's beyond speculation that we, the people, are considered the enemies of our own government. The road we're on leads to a very dark place, a place where Mao's China and Stalin's USSR found themselves on. Our sacred Constitution is in tatters and won't protect us. We are not immune to tyranny. We are currently mired in it and won't accept it. Snowden's contribution will be to help us accept it.
A figure of speech out here in the Old West/New West.
Hung? Nobody should be hung, or otherwise killed for such petty offenses, hell, we don't even kill most convicted murderers!
dlb, I'm just guessin', but I'd say the point this week is:
Conservatives should all be lined up and shot. The always-obsequious Mick would tend to confirm that, no? And, that's the point of the column 45 or so weeks each year.
On another topic... BICYCLE HELMET MIRROR
It's called the "Take A Look" - it's proven far more sturdy than the various plastic counterparts. Highly recommended. Available at your favorite online retailer; I've also recently spotted it at the REI.
Cheers, to all you loyal Cope readers, and excuse me for my indiscreet digression.
I agree with your list and that Snowden should be Hung along with the rest of them.
Give em Hell Cope! They more than deserve it.
I admire John Rember and have had great discussions with him.
So two things. One, I've paid some attention to this ever since the days of being on Larry Craig's Sawtooth Advisory Board. Park Service management was never an option. Its probably not well understood, but a president can designate USFS to manage a Wild Cloud Monument. Its what's in the proclamation that matters. Two, if you are going to get what we might call "legal wilderness" you need Congress to act. That means votes. Perhaps understanding what it took to get the original Wilderness Act through Congress might help everyone. Guess what was taken out of the final bill.. a provision to let the president declare wilderness.
I was a former NPS seasonal and Ill let the totalitarian comment pass because in some cases its probably true, as it is for a lot of large institutions. Bu the current director, a former Craters superintendent, and an old friend, is the first biologist to head NPS and never struck me as much of a totalitarian.
I went to Panama City last December and stayed in one of those beautiful high rise apartments. That place is growing like a weed. There are worse places to invest. But I am not a city boy.
Ellsburg exposed dated material to the New York Times. Snowden took various computers and zip drives full of current state secrets and handed them over to China and Russia. No comparison. Snowden will be on the run for the rest of his days. And should be. Somehow I think he is after more than just exposing the excesses of the NSA, but I doubt foreign governments are buying what he is selling when they can take it from him at no cost. He is a fool. Had he behaved more like Ellsberg, maybe he could be called a hero.
You need a best date night category for those business that are unique to defy your current classification. For example: http://www.paintnsip.com
Did anyone figure out what point old boy is trying to make with this blog?
