"They misunderestimate me!"
John Rember is a great addition to the Weekly. I look forward to his writing in each issue.

"Never cheat an honest man or smarten up a chump."
Lies, half truths, disinformation and hate speech. Typical Bill Cope. Boy. The University of Idaho is really scrapping the bottom of the "libtard" barrel offering Cope the President of the University position. Fair warning to the parents of the students attending there. You're paying for this type of lunacy.
"What you've just said is one of the most insanely idiotic things I have ever heard. At no point in your rambling, incoherent response were you even close to anything that could be considered a rational thought. Everyone in this room is now dumber for having listened to it. I award you no points, and may God have mercy on your soul."
I can see billcope pounding out this blog at the dine-in tables at Fred Meyer. Hopefully he tipped the girl working the coffee counter well for providing him with some tips on current websites.
Then he went back to reading his Reader's Digest and Cat Fancy magazines.
lol OMG Cope is a BOMB (burned out middleage boomer)
"So extensive were the cumulative effects of these modifications that it may be said that the general consequence of the Indian occupation of the New World was to replace forested land with grassland or savanna, or, where the forest persisted, to open it up and free it from underbrush. Most of the impenetrable woods encountered by explorers were in bogs or swamps from which fire was excluded; naturally drained landscape was nearly everywhere burned. Conversely, almost wherever the European went, forests followed. The Great American Forest may be more a product of settlement than a victim of it."
If you to walk off the trail in the Sawtooth Valley for a short distance and look on the ground, you will see bits of charcoal left over from old fires.
"The Pinus contorta as a species is very dependent on fire as a mode of replacing itself. The bark of the lodgepole pine is fairly thin, minimizing the defense the tree has to fire. The stands are so densely populated that the trees self thin, or out compete, each other leaving dead trees in the stand. These dead trees become a dry ladder fuel to accelerate the fire to the crown of the tree. When the fire reaches the crowns of the trees, it can jump from tree to tree and becomes relatively unstoppable. These stand-replacing fires open the cones, releasing the seeds, and are what most species of lodgepole pine rely on to be able to regenerate."
We need opinionators like Cope to talk back to the Idaho CIPs (Creeps In Charge).
So, in response to climate change, put fires out so more brush builds up and the fires are even bigger?? That's totally backasswards. We need 3 things: judicious thinning around homes, controlled fire in the backcountry, and better community planning. Allowing natural fires in the Wilderness and roadless forests of Idaho safeguards firefighters, saves tax dollars, and will help to restore the role of fire and make our forests more resilient in the face of climate change. The sooner we understand this, the better off we'll be. Of course, letting fires burn everywhere doesn't make sense.
Believe it or not the 1st Amendment protects hate, vulgar, and venomous fascist slurs all the same.
It is amazing to me how much venomous hatred is applauded nowadays. Once upon a time any public person spewing like Ann Coulter would be run out of town on a rail, or at least dropped from public view and forced to crawl into a corner with like minded haters to silently plot their return to public view and mainstream discourse. Surprise! That day is here. Creeps and confidence men from the John Birch Society to stalwarts of the KKK have crawled out of their hidey holes and become the voice of today's Republican party. Now we can see both their public and private faces. I find neither attractive.
If you built a combustible House in the Stanley Basin, you're a Dummy twice over. If your house is non-combustible you have nothing to worry about even if the Fire Fighters don't get there in time to protect your home. You live in the middle of a Lodge Pole Pine Forest that grows fast and burns frequently. If you think your area is going to turn into a desert anytime soon, check the geologic record in your location and see if its happened before.
Glad you mentioned the Sahara, Dummy. The Sahara is on a 21 thousand year cycle. 21 thousand years of Desert flips to 21 thousand years of wetland/grassland, which is caused by Earth's combined changes in tilt and elliptical orbit around the Sun. Check out the geologic record of the Sahara if you don't believe. Glad you mentioned 400 ppm. No big deal because CO2 is a trace gas not causing global warming. 400ppm is one molecule of CO2 for every 2500 molecules of Atmosphere. The Earth's atmosphere contains just under 800 gigatons of Carbon. Annual anthropogenic Carbon contribution is about 9 gigatons. Do the Math. Natural annual exchange of Carbon between the Atmosphere, Soils, Ocean Surfaces and Plants is about 300 gigatons of Carbon. In any case the Atmosphere at present is actually CO2 starved compared to the last 400 millions years of Geologic Time. Atmospheric CO2 has been above 2000ppm for millions of years at a time without any ill effects on life because CO2 is actually plant food not an air pollutant. In any case atmospheric CO2 absorbs about 8% of IR radiation leaving the earth, the other 92% passes right through CO2 For the last 2.5 million years Earth has been in an Ice Age with short interglacial warming cycles. During the last 1 million years the last 7 Ice Age-Interglacial warming cycles have come, pretty much like clockwork, 100 thousand years of Ice age and 15-20 thousand years of interglacial warming. About 20 thousand year ago mean sea level was 300 ft less than now and mean sea level atmospheric temp. was about 20degreesF less than now. Why is Daytime Warmer than Nighttime? Why is Summer Warmer than Winter? Its the amount of Sunlight, Dummy, not the Amount of Atmospheric CO2! Night time lows are dropping close to freezing at Stanley & West Yellowstone because? Less Sun, Dummy not Less CO2.
Wow! That hateful, sexy, bony, cracker bitch turns me on! The closer to the Bone the Sweeter the Meat!
The U of I is not the college it used to be. Boise State is growing up fast, and the U of I is nervous.
Ajax obviously you have never been to north Idaho, all the benefits you listed are readily available there. It is true air travel can be a challenge. In addition the enrollment at U of I has been steadily increasing not decreasing http://www.uidaho.edu/newsevents/item?name…. Also U of I is second to only one major institution in the northwest when it comes to National Merit Scholarships. The U of I has a rich tradition in academic leadership, research, and student athletics. An as the column said the University of Idaho is Idaho's Flagship Institution of Advanced Education.
When will the people of Idaho get wise to the GOP's fleecing of our education system?
Long-time Cope readers will join me in appreciating the irony of the "small-time alternative weekly liberal venom-spewer," taking the "big-time big-stage conservative venom-spewer" to task!
The nerve of that Ann Coulter! Thinking she's superior to liberals because her conservative ideology is better! What a kook! (Hahahahaha!)
Classic column, Bill! Just like your column every week!
I don't take Ann Coulter any more seriously than I take Bill. (Although I read Bill almost every week, and I can't remember the last time I read anything Ann wrote.) I DO know this - I'd pay five bucks to see the two of 'em in an "Octagon Steel Cage Death Match" that goes until one of 'em is either dead or cries "Uncle!" (My money would be on Coulter, because her tribe is superior to Cope's.)
