Re: “MASSV Music Fest Finds its Footing

I'm not sure exactly what "It is MASSV" was witness to, but I can tell you that I was in the room when a local promoter received a phone call from Lucas Glick (CJ's father). This promoter was trying to put together a benefit fundraiser for what was left of DP (now called Psyence Labs under threat of legal action), at the request of Zack and CJ's closest friends and business partners. There was zero money to be used for anything other than trying to continue the work that Zack, Justin and others had been working on for years. Any money that could be set aside for a memorial to Zack and CJ would be, and the next allotment was to go to help with Sound Camp at EE. IF there was any money left over, it would have gone to DP. But Mr. Glick called this local promoter and told him that if he even used the words "A Tribute to Zack and CJ Peterson", OR "In Memory of Zack and CJ Peterson", that he would sue that promoter so fast "his head would spin". I watched this promoter try to reason with Mr. Glick for a half hour - just trying to find a reason why the Boise EDM community couldn't say they were doing this event in their memory. Mr. Glick basically said that they could use their names, but only if all the money went to him. So the promoter had NO choice but to drop their names from the event. It wasn't even 48 hours later when MASSV started using the phrase "In Memory of Zack and CJ Peterson" on their event. Why? Because THEY agreed to cut the families in. So when you say these things are untrue, I question how you could make that assumption. Also - If you were there, and you say you know that "their house was ransacked", then you MUST know they didn't live alone. Let's talk to the people that lived in the same house with them, and ask THEM who stole Zack and CJ's things (as well as property that DIDN'T belong to Zack and CJ). You can take what you THINK you saw on the DP board and twist into how the Glicks and Colleen are not slimeballs, but those that were REALLY there know the truth. If these conversations exist, then by all means, make them public. Post them here. Or in the Facebook event page. Or anywhere. But you can't. Because they don't exist! Don't just take what the slimeballs told you as gospel and then spout it out like you have some inside info. If you really have access to these conversations POST THEM! I'll throw my support behind the guy that says he would start a new competing festival.

Re: “MASSV Music Fest Finds its Footing

I was there. I know what happened. I know how hard Zach and Brent worked on this together. I know how glad Zach was to have Brent on board, and vice versa. I know how hard the investors/planners in Ketchum tried to keep the Boise EDM crowd on board, but their demands became preposterous and their voices became shrill. The comment that there was threats of legal action and violence against the Boise folks it as silly as it is false. The only legal threats were by Zach and CJ's families, since their house was ransacked by a bunch of "friends" from DP, less than 12 hours after they died. DP acted like they did not know what happened to the 5K of stuff they removed, but it is documented on their chat room, DP dividing the spoils while the family's grieve. Sad, pathetic, and unbelievably selfish.

If you were an investor/planner and you heard the the DP team had lied to Zach and CJ's family about this, would you trust them with your money? If so, I can give you their contact info so you can send them all the money you'd like to 'invest".

BTW, I was at MASSV last night. It was amazing! Those guys knocked it out of the park! Love to Zach's and CJ's families and the rest of the MASSV team!

Re: “MASSV Music Fest Finds its Footing

Zack's equipment was stolen? The only people that "stole" his equipment were his family. The family even took things that didn't belong to them. As others have said here before, maybe you should actually TALK to Zack and CJ's housemates and hear how THEY feel about what was stolen. Two things about the last comment: First - Super petty to talk about how he spelled his name. It's pretty stupid actually. I only ever saw Zack spell it with it a "K". As in "Zacklander". But I don't think he would care HOW it was spelled, as long as it was written with - wait for it - love. I personally can't see any love in what any of the MASSV team have done since April 22nd. Second - I think building a competing festival would be a GREAT idea. I'm willing to pledge the time and effort to make it happen. And I think you have severely underestimated the "bravado and juice" of those that just didn't want Zack and CJ's memory used in a loathsome way. The fact that they are going to continue to say MASSV is "In Memory of Zack and CJ Peterson", after they threatened people in Boise with LAWSUITS for even SAYING they wanted to do an event in their memory, is so far beyond hypocritical that it makes people just want to see those individuals never succeed. THEY were the ones that took the death of others, and have tried to make money from it. I don't care what anybody says. Zack confided in some of us his real feelings for some of these people (including Colleen), and even from the grave, I can hear him whisper to them - "Karma is a bitch".

Re: “Don't Listen Here

Interesting, Nickelback played to sold out venues in 2011 and by the looks of the video posted for Josh, he sold out a Starbucks. Compared to drivel of copycat wannabe's in the, everyone is musician, music industry - Nickelback are what they are. Like them or not, they are successful...they laugh all the way to the bank. And that pisses off individuals like cynical, balding, paunch(y), Josh..............Sorry about your small p.enis Josh.

Re: “MASSV Music Fest Finds its Footing

He left out the part where someone broke into Zach/k's place and stole his equipment after he died. (Whom of those closest to him should I consult on how to properly spell his name? Many of his close friends spell it differently. That's right... So close.) The author also left out the part that insight into the DP message board showed people going back and forth about who should get what.... and complaining when his equipment went to his family. These are the people who will try to pass off other's actions as deplorable whilst their own are deemed to be what is right based on how they say Zach/k felt about his family.
So for all the whiners out there complaining about the festival going on... which is still a mess but more organized than it was when this tragedy happened and all you guys were "in charge"... since you are such professionals with a consummate knowledge of the scene and the politics it takes to get one of these rolling... it should be no problem to get another festival going and stomp the hell out of this one. Right? I figured that as strong as your crew is/was... that should be no issue at all. Or is all the bravado and juice that you guys said you had... was that all a front?

Re: “MASSV Music Fest Finds its Footing

As one of Zach's closest friends and cofounder of Dark Psyence I can tell you that there are a lot of flaws with this article. After their deaths the festival was taken from the people that helped him with the label and turned over to a competing production company. This would have been the last thing that they would have wanted. They also told us that we could no longer use the Dark Psyence name which is particularly upsetting to me since we created the name together. So when my dear friends died their dream died with them due to the greed of others. This festival will go on in vain.

Re: “MASSV Music Fest Finds its Footing

oh boy...i have read all the comments that have been posted and am seriously disgusted by all of you. Would you all really think that not having a festival would be Zach and CJ's opinion if things didnt go their way? This is the real world people and you need money to make things happen. In order to bring money you have to appease the masses. Please, at least the festival is still happening and it is due to the dreams of these two beautiful people. RESPECT THAT!

Re: “MASSV Music Fest Finds its Footing

This is typical writing by "The" Josh Gross (HIS title for himself). He talks to a couple of his buddies that support his Godcrotch Experiment, and only gets one side of the story. Did he talk to any of the "several people assisting Peterson"? I doubt it. Do some real work for once Josh. Not just another easy piece to meet a deadline. If you have any journalistic integrity, you'll actually talk to those people that were "assisting" Zacklander, and write a follow up piece about the truth.

Re: “MASSV Music Fest Finds its Footing

Dude - You seriously have the cajones to use the name "WWZ&CJD"? What would they do? If they were here right now, they would be telling the investors and organizers that they took their vision, twisted it, and systematically destroyed relationships that took years to build. These "one or three collaborators" that you claim to know were treated like their opinions meant nothing, in the wake of a tragic loss. How would you feel if your best friends had just died, and while you are trying to pick up the pieces, you are told the pieces aren't yours to pick up? Unless of course you have money! There were threats of litigation, as well as physical harm to the "collaborators", and it was based on one thing, and only one thing. Money. When people that Zack and CJ had zero respect for, and would have NEVER allowed to have even the smallest say in their business dealings came out of the woodwork following their deaths, the ONLY consideration was money. How much can we make, and if we don't make money this year, how can we make sure that we make money next year? You are correct when you say that the event will most likely lose money. How could that have been prevented even without Zack and CJ around? By listening to, working with, and finding common ground with, the people who were closest to them. The EDM community in Boise did not start this. The community had no issue whatsoever with MASSV continuing on to fulfill Zack's dreams. Do you think that is what happened? While I try never to speak for a whole community, and I am obviously generalizing here (there will obviously be EDM fans from Boise who can't resist the urge to see GO or BA), I think I can honestly say without hesitation - What would Zack and CJ do? They would be sad, disappointed and angry. But not at those that loved them and just wanted MASSV done properly. They would reserve their head shaking for those that THINK they knew them, and instead trashed their dreams.

Re: “MASSV Music Fest Finds its Footing

I don't buy into the self-righteous indignation fire that has been fanned by a few, and consumed a community. Yes, Zachary's death changed things, yes it was f#cking inconvenient for all of us who loved him and CJ. Zack wasn't the money behind the event, and the investor(s) made hard decisions after his passing. In the words of Kurt Vonnegut: So it goes.

That anyone who loved Zack & CJ would cry so hard about money (that will probably be lost on this first MASSV event) is the mark of jealousy of perhaps an individual or two that imagine they are going to miss out on some eggs that haven't even hatched yet. Excuse me? Is your name Zack or CJ peterson? No? That's what I thought, so STFU.

I'm going to have to side with Spock on this one. Yes, the fictional character from Star Trek, who believed that the good of the majority (The music scene in Idaho—terribly undernourished and just now catching a glimmer of hope after Treefort) is more important than the individual (the one or three collaborators with Dark Psyence who tagged after Zack and freely accepted CJ's monetary investments in Dark Psyence).

I personally have recorded in my memory Zack and CJ's immortal attitude of, "F#ck it. Let's have fun and shoot for the stars!"

For those who don't believe in that dream, I am truly sorry.

Re: “MASSV Music Fest Finds its Footing

If you ask around, most of the people who knew Zack and CJ... their close friends... will not be attending MASSV. This is because those of us who knew them understood the vision. Sure, I would LOVE to see Beats Antique and Ghostland Observatory, but refuse to put a single dollar into the pockets of those who are undeserving. This whole thing, afterall, is all about money. Zack and CJ were HUGE parts of the community they were a part of, and are missed dearly.

Re: “MASSV Music Fest Finds its Footing

If BW wanted to get the real story on MASSV, they would actually talk to the people in the Boise EDM scene. Then, they would find that what really happened in the wake of Zack and CJ's deaths is beyond slimy. Zack's family DID tell him he was crazy. Because they couldn't care less about the work he was doing. Colleen didn't read his email at first? That's because anybody who knew Zack knew what he thought about his sister. And it wasn't good. The whole sentiment that this festival is continuing on "in their memory" is a joke. The idea in Zack's mind was an EDM festival. Not what MASSV has become. Everything he worked for was hijacked from the people that truly knew him and were helping him achieve his dream. And they did it for money. Threats, disrespect, and just plain old greed that will never come to light, were their tools. But let's just pretend that this is a good thing for Idaho. The actions of a few have fractured an entire community. And if BW would do their research, they would find a litany of The Peterson's friends that are simply disgusted with the whole thing.

Re: “Don't Listen Here

I had to follow up with this after some time had passed.

By writing 150 words Joss Gross went viral around the internet - and he did so in a way that generated a very large amount of praise as well as negative critisism - That is awesome. Most journalists will never achieve this. While this isn't a career maker by any means, it's certainly a boon. All of this happened because he humourly, and cleaverly, expressed his opinion about a relatively trivial subject which created strongly polarized opinions.

Everyone has an opinion about a band. Few have their opinion go virtal.

Regardless of my opinion on Nickleback, I apreciate this piece. It's truly a work of art.

I eagerly look forward to more writing from Josh Gross. :-)

Re: “Don't Listen Here

Wow, Josh Gross, you're a moron. You've had absolutely no success whatsoever. You are a hack that has to put stories in a flyer sized newspaper. It's amazing that nobody's like you have the audacity to criticize successful, creative people such as Nickelback, when you have absolutely nothing going for you. When you make dumb comments like you have then you are not only speaking to Nickelback but also to the millions and millions of fans they have worldwide. You are an idiot and you will continue to sit behind your desk smoking 2 packs of cigs per day, shaving every 3rd day and continuing to be a nobody that will never do anything significant in your life because you lack the brains, creativity, or talent to do anything.

Re: “Wilco is Not a Country Band

Nice article, but two points of clarification:

Uncle Tupelo was based in Belleville, Illinois. That's in the southern part of the state, near St. Louis, not in the Chicago area. (Tweedy moved to Chicago after UT called it quits.) is a database of all Wilco concerts. is the online fan community for Wilco fans.
