Re: “Proponents Ignite Plan to Bump Cigarette Tax to Lower Tuition

Proof that there are those who are more than willing to steal from one group and give to another under the guise of taxation for the betterment of the society.

Smokers should not be forced to subsidize anything but their own future healthcare.

Re: “Idaho Health Officials on High Vaccination Exemption Rate: 'That Path Can Lead to Serious Illness'

For all the anti vaccination people, consider this. Polio, Leprosy and Small Pox are not likely to ravage your society, due to the global vaccinations against these infections. I'm sure there is a lot to be concerned about when it comes to immunizations but the bottom line is, You don't have the right to put all of humanity at risk for your petty and ignorant (religious) views on science.

Re: “In Stunning Reversal, Idaho Prison Officials Ban Use of 'Barbaric' Dry Cells

I have personal knowledge of a non-violent offender who was NOT suicidal, NOT a threat to anyone, NOT "acting up" or "acting out", NOT breaking any rules and was put in a dry cell more than once. Everyone with knowledge of this practice is convinced the purpose of these dry cells is to punish and humiliate prisoners who are already at the mercy of prison staff. What about retribution of some kind for these men (not sure if the womens' prison is this barbaric) who have been mistreated and abused by this system. How about 2 days off their sentence for every 1 day spent in a dry cell?

Stunning that Idaho can't think for itself, relies on the slap on the wrist to actually do something. Put your Broncos flag down and wake the fuck up.

Re: “In Stunning Reversal, Idaho Prison Officials Ban Use of 'Barbaric' Dry Cells

This turn of institutional face is good news and illustrates how effective Federal District Court Judge David O. Carter’s ruling against IDOC has been. Let’s hope these turns continue in other areas as well. Unfortunately, Director Kempf continues to sidestep his executive responsibility by stating that the change of mindset is based upon “research” rather than the federal court ruling.

During the recent Balla hearings IDOC unswervingly and vigorously argued that the dry cell practices were an appropriate means of offender management. IDOCs clear position in this regard during the hearings made perfect sense since during the time frame addressed in the hearings Prison Chief Kempf, who subsequently moved up the ranks as Deputy Director and now Director, was responsible for their continued use to punish offenders.

Director Kempf obviously has changed his public mind, which is a notch to the good for Idaho. However, as for the motivation behind the change, it is clear that the research he refers to pointedly preceded the court’s ruling against IDOC. One is skeptical that Director Kempf would wet down the dry cells without Judge Carter’s enforceable umbrage.

Re: “In Stunning Reversal, Idaho Prison Officials Ban Use of 'Barbaric' Dry Cells

I wonder if it is the best thing to isolate someone who is suicidal in the first place. On the other hand they most often need constant surveillance and limited access to objects that might make suicide more easily accomplished. Perhaps there are ways to provide the supervision and support without isolating the suicidal inmate. Perhaps other inmates identified as able to be supportive companions could be trained, paid and utilized to be part of a team that works with suicidal inmates. Perhaps there are other approaches as well that could be utilized without causing excessive costs. Maybe we need a task force to explore the issue and come up with recommendations.

Re: “Proponents Ignite Plan to Bump Idaho Cigarette Tax to Lower Tuitition

How about a kid tax? They're the ones reaping the benefits of lower tuition. This is just BS - and targeting a group of folks already paying 57 cents a pack to fill the state coffers. I think it's a very simple proposition: gas tax for people that use lots of gas and kid tax for people that have lots of kids they can't afford to send to school.

Re: “Proponents Ignite Plan to Bump Idaho Cigarette Tax to Lower Tuitition

Can't our 'betters' think of anything else to tax except booze and smokes, guess not.
Maybe if they are so into 'sin' taxes then they should legalize marijuana and tax that, best excuse for a tax I can think of.
Several years ago a tax of a whole penny was suggested per bottle/can of soda pop, sheesh the screams were echoing through the Snake River Canyon for weeks, practically went deaf until this great idea was laid to rest.
Even better, make the damn churches pay a 10% tithe. They could, at the very least, help pay for the now free to them infrastructure, that atheists have to pay for them.

Re: “Proponents Ignite Plan to Bump Idaho Cigarette Tax to Lower Tuitition

Instead of just cigarettes, raise/start new taxes on: Fast food, alcohol, coffee, cell phone use, video game sales and makeup. Call it a youth tax or luxury tax. Soon college would be "free"!

So, smokers paid for the capital renovation, now you want them to subsidize the colleges, all while not letting them smoke in the parks or in bars. Yeah, that's fair.

Re: “Confederate Flag Flap at Wilder COSSA School, Plus N. Idaho Lawmakers Whistle Dixie in Parade

Let's remember the confederacy and the flag that represents the confederacy was the enemy of the Union in the Civil War. The Idaho territory was part of the Union at the time and had troops protecting the Oregon trail. The flag represents an insult to former Union troops that fought for the U.S. and Idaho in efforts to keep the Union together.

Lazy school administrators and dumb rednecks. Maybe I'm too hard on the admins, but zero tolerance policies are what happens when you cut education funds. The flag belongs in a museum, but other than that no government institution should display it outside of a historical context. But the kid has his first amendment right to proudly display how much of an ignorant hick he is

Re: “Confederate Flag Flap at Wilder COSSA School, Plus N. Idaho Lawmakers Whistle Dixie in Parade

The left? The flag was the symbol of a culture that kept human beings as farm animals, tortured, raped, murdered them and sold off the children. A despicable culture that committed mass treason. If you question the heritage of this flag, read the Articles of Secession of the State of South Carolina.

I'm sorry but I don't know of any "gang" in Idaho that uses the rebel flag as a gang sign.

Re: “Confederate Flag Flap at Wilder COSSA School, Plus N. Idaho Lawmakers Whistle Dixie in Parade

I don't know who "the left" is supposed to be other than your inept attempt to discredit a valid point by ad hominem attack. Sensible people are saying if you don't want to look like an ignorant racist you probably shouldn't be sporting a racist flag. It doesn't matter what you "believe" that flag means. It was the battle flag of traitors to the union who were fighting for states' rights to have slavery. They lost the war that cost 600,000 lives. At the end of the war they did not respect each other's beliefs. One side was discredited and lost. Unfortunately, because of ignorance we are still fighting the battle to overcome racism 150 years later. Wake up.

Re: “Confederate Flag Flap at Wilder COSSA School, Plus N. Idaho Lawmakers Whistle Dixie in Parade

So the left is saying we should all ignore history. The battle flag is no more racist as the gay rights flag the black panther flag. If you find it so don't look at it, the left again wants only what they approve of, freedom to express one's pride in ones heritage is a right. My fore fathers fought for both south and the north one side for independence the other to preserve the union. after the struggle they both respected each other's views and came to Idaho maybe we should take a look at there example

Only losers wave a racist flag belonging to other losers but then again, this is Idaho, the deep south of the Northwest.
