Why is educating our young people such a LOW priority in Idaho? Of the 50 states Idaho ranks #49 in terms of funding for education and only 10% of high school graduates in Idaho later graduate from college. If our young people are not adequately educated how are they to compete in the national and global market place? The US is falling behind Asian and European countries in education. How are we as a country to compete against a better educated and more qualified work force in the global economy? A 4-day school week is UNACCEPTABLE and we expect more for our students. If you are unwilling to advocate for education then perhaps you are not the right person for the job of representing Idaho voters in the House Education Committee. There is NO advantage to a 4-day school week for students and it is UNACCEPTABLE for Idaho's students and Idaho voters.

It doesn't matter why they're in there. They're human beings, and when they're treated like animals it has serious repercussions. They're supposed to be in prison for rehabilitation, not to be abused and traumatized to become even more dysfunctional. In the end, society suffers. There is no health organization in the world thats going to agree dry cells are therapeutic or necessary. Save your canned speech to justify abusing people. It makes you sound like a criminal with your "they had it coming" attitude. Hypocrites.
There must have been some reason your son was incarcerated twice in 2 states. He also was placed on a restrictive status. Oregon follows a national health standard and inmates are closely monitored by security, medical, nursing, and mental health staff. If there is a dry cell status it's typically for a medical condition /emergency. Dignity and respect are also honored.
My son was an inmate at IDOC for the last 5 years and had the same experiences with "dry cells" talked about in yor article. He is too afraid to go public and I think he is presently mentally ill from his prison experiences in Idaho and Oregon. They were doing the same things in Ontario, Oregon when he was there for 2 years. I firmly believe that this crap goes on thru out the country. There will be a special place reserved for these sadistic people in the next life when they have to face their victims. We need more than body cameras for these perverts.
I love the Boise pools. I absolutely can't stand them shutting them down early in August -- Lowell and South specifically -- right when temps hit 90's and 100's. I wrote a letter to the Parks and Rec a few years ago, they called and were very polite and said they don't have enough lifeguards when school starts. Perhaps hire some college kids?
My friends and I have a joke: When do you know it's summer? When Boise starts closing their pools.
That said, it appears South and Lowell have been extended a week this year. They used to shut it down on August 8/9, just incredible. I like the pools, Borah, Lowell, South, Natatorium, etc., very well-run, great lifeguards, etc. Just keep them open until Labor Day weekend -- all of them!
"You can't keep throwing money into a Pinto."
Some of us old-timers think of those vintage pools more like a '57 Chevy or '59 Cadillac, than a Pinto!
Are they inherently defective? Is there something about their design, or age, that makes 'em particularly expensive to maintain?
Sure - they aren't Olympic-size pools with all the modern amenities... but they fit nicely in their neighborhoods. I live just blocks from the South pool, and I think it's charming. A ground-level sterile Michael-Phelps pool just wouldn't be the same.
Tim Johnson is a very selfless person. I have known him my whole life and he would take the shirt off his back if he thought you needed it. His life has not been easy but he is always the last person you hear complaining and the first person to crack a smile. Boise Cold has a great crew, Tim IS the coolest and Kristi Dietz is pretty awesome herself! Kimberly Lee
Tim is a really great guy! We feel fortunate to know him and his wonderful family. So glad he and his company got some well deserved recognition. It was also interesting to find out the history and workings of Boise Cold Storage. Well done Boise Weekly! We think he's way better looking than the sketch though!
I know Tim Johnson well, he's my big brother. And he IS the coolest guy in town hands down. There are a few errors reported in this article, one to correct is that it was our grandfather Farris Lind who founded the Stinker Stations, which are no longer a family business since about 2002. We are proud to be Farris's lineage, he too was a great man like Tim. Errors aside, Tim and his team have made Boise Cold Storage a great business rooted and invested in our local community. Proud, honest, hard working.
Congrats Sara! So happy for you, you'll do great! Rhonda D.
A few days on the job and his SWAT team is kicking in the wrong door? Probably couldn't find the guy they wanted so they step on a relative or a friend instead. Just like a credit card companies do. I'm just happy they didn't frame anybody to avoid embarrassment, so there is one bright spot.
These wrong address entries are not errors, they are intentional intimidation. They know it's the wrong target or an insignificant target, but they figure they'll find something to justify it once inside. The prime objective is to violently harass and intimidate people close to the person they want.
Lastly, the person who really needs to be on the hook for such an egregious violation of rights is the judge who rubber-stamps everything the cops ask for. What the hell are you judges thinking?
Sara Arkle will be an excellent steward of Boise's amazing foothills!
Couldn't have asked for a better advocate to manage the trail system. Congratulations and good luck Sara!
Solution is simple. Someone will make sure the charters never have to report that kind of data again!
Levi Cavener, I think you are on to something. It may not have gone as far in Idaho (or maybe there are fewer journalists willing to investigate) but the pattern is here. http://dianeravitch.net/2015/06/24/chicago…
Any journalists out there willing to dig? There's more!
Kids in charter schools are being denied the opportunity to know a variety of minority students. They can learn prejudices without any personal experience to balance them. It's not fair to them and not good for the country.
I wish this person actually existed. A classic story of fiction for someone that doesn't deserve any of the praise. I wish more people knew her so they would stop acting like she is a good person.
