Re: “Four Hikers Attempt the 900-Mile Idaho Centennial Trail

Kudos to the hikers!

But I disagree with the emphasis on building (and mainting) thru trails. Pounding out the miles on a groomed trail like the PCT compared to following a vanishing trapper or Indian route is day and night -- off trail in the back country is to PCT thru hiking as trail walking is to schlepping along the shoulder of a highway.

I'm all for sharing knowledge of routes -- stream fords, downed timber to avoid, ridges to walk, and impassable cliffs or slide alder to avoid. With GPS that can now be easily shared without the need for blazing. Beyond that, sure maintain some sections along the route in popular areas. But trails are historically maintained by each passing animal.

Thru hiking -- well that is often about milestones and bragging rights. You'll never learn what you will crossing a mountain range off trail.

Re: “Four Hikers Attempt the 900-Mile Idaho Centennial Trail

Yeah it was definitely a tough start. A wedding at the end of June pushed our start date a little too far into the danger zone. Had to give it a shot though. I just finished rehiking those miles today. Even in September at 70 degrees, it was still a tough hike.

Re: “Four Hikers Attempt the 900-Mile Idaho Centennial Trail

If a person is going to hike Owyhee county and the Bruneau Desert in Late June and July they are making a huge mistake. Better to brave the Wild Westerly Winds and start in April or early May, as soon as the High country is clear of snow. Heck a person could start just North of Jarbidge and begin the hike way earlier than June 30. No rule says that you have to positively start at an arbitrary starting ling anyway.
Blisters on the first day and then panic tells me that not enough thought went into this trip. Panic is the last thing needed on a long hike.

Re: “The Boys of Boise: 60 Years Later

Jose, calling an accident of birth deviance is fascist and has no place in this country. Decent Americans eagerly fight and kill fascists.

Re: “Into the Fire

Thank you for this story. I am a female who is currently going through Department of Defense fire training; I am one of 6 out of probably close to 300 and the only female in my specific class of 20. I am held to the same standard as all the men in the academy and I wouldn't expect it any other way. If possible I would love to connect with Ashley as a female mentor. Please let me know how best to provide my information to her.
Thank you,

Re: “Into the Fire

To clarify a statement from Chief Doan; the physical agility test was not eliminated from the Boise Fire hiring process to make it easier for females and minorities to get hired. The test was not a good indicator of a candidate making it through the fire academy. The test was only recently stopped; when I was hired in 2007 I had to pass the CPAT physical test along with every other candidate. The standards for the hiring process and every single other test throughout a firefighters probationary year are the same regardless of gender. The Boise Fire Department has NEVER lowered the standards in order to get more females hired.

Re: “Rough Road: The Trials and Tribulations of Biking in Boise

Teaching future cyclists that they don't deserve to have a safe place to ride. Suck it up and be a car, otherwise you deserve to get hit by the driver on a cell phone. Mother-fucking ridiculous!!! As long as ACHD, ITD and the City of Boise defer to the BBP and TVCA mafia, we will have more of the same, bikes and helmets for kids just to be trained to manage near death encounters with the good folk drivers of Idaho. Do Idahoan's know how to protest? or are they afraid? or are they just wimps? And yes, I have been to your committee meetings, volunteered and donated my money to the groups. Question is, will these groups ever step up to real change, or will they all become non-profits that somehow turn a profit to buy buildings?

Eye drops bypass the liver and have worse side effects than usual. It seemed harmless when the doc told me to use them every other hour but not so!

Re: “Reshaping the Right: How Right-Wing Emigrants Conquered North Idaho

Everyone, regardless of their politics, has a right to move where they want. Including immigrants. The beauty of this is that the currently conservative dominated parts of Idaho are currently being populated by left-leaning Latino immigrants and other minorities. This will only accelerate as the birth rate of the "white" majority declines. Conservatives must adapt to this, just as the Idaho dems adapted to the conservative swing.

Re: “Ada County Paramedics Cope with Internal Tragedy After Two Commit Suicide

While many of the people here have commented about first responder culture, etc., you also have to look internally to the culture of this department. Consistent dysfunction, lack of leadership, and an internal culture of "cowboy up" do not help with mental health and stress. I am not saying that is what caused it but it certainly did not help. Too bad no one has the courage to talk about the reality of the internal culture of this department.

hey james, i find it absolutely HILLARIOUS that you CONSTANTLY and CONTINUALLY link cdc.goc and because the government, and an obviously corporately controlled quack science outlet are naturally the first choices for any sane person seeking universal facts.

Re: “The Boys of Boise: 60 Years Later

I was a teenager during that period. The boys that I knew then liked the fun and the sex. The book that started the phrase doesn't really want to recognize this. I wasn't part of it but surely did hear a lot about it.
