Well put, expeditionpb. I worked for only 3 years in K-12 education and had to leave because I couldn't make enough to pay my student loans. They'll forgive oh, $5000 of them if I work in a low-income district for five years. Drop in the bucket to the $50,000 I took out to get a Masters in hopes of better teacher preparation and pay. I got neither. I teach for two community colleges now, and I love it. I spend just as much time, and am not paid much more, but I deal with far less administrative issues and paperwork. I agree that the average complaining citizen could never survive as a K-12 teacher. I wish we could require all our lawmakers to spend a full week in a classroom shadowing a teacher to see how difficult our job really is.
I picked a bad year to move to Idaho to teach at a community college. (Or K-12, for that matter).
