"You can count on me." Everything the author wrote after this can be entirely ignored by the politician. Essentially, the author is a cowering serf expecting a powerful lord to protect and provide.
The lord, knowing that he can "count on" the serf, is free to ignore the serf's plight, complaints, and general sniveling.
but if the author wishes to be an exemplary serf, he needs to adopt the virute of silence. His fealty given, along with his self respect and freedom, his role is to toil in humility, not to forget his station.
