Mark Potok is a public relations man with no legal or law enforcement experience. The SPLC pays Potok nearly $150,000 donor-dollars a year to cook up "right-wing" conspiracies and other fund-raising pap.
"“The reality is, we have been seeing a resurgence of the radical-right in this country over the past several years, especially the last two years, and the Pacific Northwest is very much a part of that."
Potok claims there are 54 "hate groups" in Washington, Oregon, Idaho and Montana, but he can't seem to locate a quarter of them anywhere on the map. Other's like Portland's three "black separatists" groups are actually the same group counted three times.
In fact, of the 1,002 "hate groups" Potok claims are in America, 262 of them have no known address. We know that they are really, really there because Mr. Potok tells us they're really there.
That's 26% right off the top.
80% of Wyoming's "groups" are phantoms and a full 100% of North Dakota's "groups" are homeless.
Of course, no one in the media would think of vetting the SPLC's claims before regurgitating them as "fact." Can't have spontaneous acts of journalism breaking out, can we?
