Re: “The Great Race: Idaho Native Says 'I do' to Iditarod

It is unfortunate that some in a sport are capable of giving the whole a tarnished reputation.
On the whole sled dogs are treated humanely and enjoy the life they were born to live. The bad stories always receive much more attention in the sensationalized media...who would look twice at a headline "Huskies enjoy running and are well cared for members of the family". I have been racing dogs for 34 years, I have rescued many of my dogs from pet homes where they were neglected, kept from performing as they are meant to and actually chastised for being the dog they are. Sure there are mushers who mistreat / abuse their dogs...there are also horse people, farmers and parents that mistreat their horses, livestock, and yes, children. So, shall we make child bearing illegal, or perhaps because abusive parents exist we should make prospective parents pass a federal test and be placed on a probation period before they are allowed to buy a permit to have children. Of course not! That would be ridiculous, because the vast majority of parents adore their children and take good care of them. Just as the vast majority of mushers adore their dogs and take good care of them. If anyone is found to be mistreating / abusing an animal surely they should face all appropriate legal consequences...but we must not allow for blanket legislation on this (or any hot topic) that is what separates the Unites States from communist / socialist nations.
