Y'all know what caused the fall of the Athenian democratic experiment (circa 400 B.C.)? Easy: i) Stalling economic growth essentially based on the exploitation of neighboring city-states; ii) Loss of social solidarity, notably in the form of whirling litigation; iii) Clientelism of the citizenry, and; iv) Rise of the demagogues. Sounds familiar? Then and now, a comic poet stood out denouncing the insanity of the times. Athens had Aristophanes. I guess America has Bill.
