The most horrifying thing about this story is how many commenters believe it's real.
Narrowing the lanes slows traffic and reduces the number and speed of collisions while also making space for bike lanes. It seems counterintuitive but it is true. If your only goal is to move vehicular traffic through an area, widen the lanes and increase the speed limit (like on Front and Myrtle). If your goal is to balance vehicle traffic with pedestrian and/or bike traffic, you have to narrow the lanes, add a bike lane, and/or lower the speed limit (like 8th Street). It's not rocket science. The only question is whether you want a city full of streets like Front and Myrtle where people just pass through or a city full of 8th Streets where people hang out, shop, and support local business.
Hopefully someday we'll see light rail or something similar connecting commuters with downtown to ease traffic... something going out along State Street to Eagle perhaps.
Congrats to you and your family, although I'm puzzled as to how someone living in the nation's second-reddest state could suggest that you're more likely to find "cannibal hillbillies" there than here. I spent all of my years in college and grad school there (including U of I) and can assure you that Iowa has much to offer.
I like your reasoning. Let's ensure our kids can read by denying them an adequate library.
