SO happy to see how the vote has gone so far with this issue. 64 agree with Governor Otter, 298 disagree with him at this moment as i am writing. i cast the 298th vote against his paranoia. i do understand that this IS the Boise Weekly though, a generally progressive publication with fewer Republican readers. It is still heartwarming!
You know, there is a REASON, the Ku Klux Klan proudly wave the Confederate flag. Not only because the Klan was created by a small group of former Confederate soldiers shortly after losing the civil war, but because the Confederate flag symbolized every thing the Klan STILL stands for, and yes that DOES include white superiority over black people, the idea of racial inequality, the idea of slavery, and the idea of sedition - the fight for state's rights to continue with slavery, and continue to base their economy on slave labor for cotton picking, and the slave trade, the trafficking of human beings bought and sold as property. The idea of segregation, the idea of Nationalism / Nativism / Fascism.. ya those are really all the same basic US versus THEM fear and hate ideology.
Revisionist history is really comforting, but it just is not reality. And the reality of that Confederate flag, and every thing it really stands for, is what is wrong with it, and why it needs to come down.
i was there and i literally wrapped mai scarf over mai own mouth and walked away to keep from yelling at him when he complained about how the federal government should not be imposing it self on the individual freedoms of Idahoans but then began talking about how he still plans to use state government to impose his unchristian fundamentalist dogma upon us all by continuing his unconstitutional attack on same-sex marriage. The man is a hypocrite. Same-sex marriage is the only marriage being attacked - by him!
To write this in terms that conservatives may accept: You want smaller government, less government restrictions on people, yes? And you stand up in defense of your constitutional rights, yes?
These anti-same sex marriage laws have already been found to be absolutely unconstitutional in every state that has set them up, every single time.
And the reason why it is unconstitutional is simple, it wrongly discriminates against some legal adults of sound mind who are in love with other legal adults of sound mind, who want to commit to that love in marriage.
And this discrimination is based, literally on the number of penises in their relationships! One is acceptable, but two or zero is against state law?
These anti-same sex marriage laws are nothing less than state level government intrusion into the marriage of every one in the state, literally trying to limit which adults you can and cannot marry.
What it comes down to is this: If it is legal for an adult man of sound mind, to marry an adult woman of sound mind, then it also needs to be equally legal for a woman of sound mind to marry a woman of sound mind, or for a sound minded adult man to marry another sound minded adult man.
These marriages are NO threat at all to your own marriage, no more than your neighbor's marriage is any threat to your own marriage... and no threat to any one's marriage traditions. Traditional marriage is not, and never has been under any sort of attack. No one is trying to make it illegal for a man to marry a woman.
The only marriages that HAVE been under attack are same sex marriages, and so far the governor of Idaho has spent just a bit more than $81,000 tax payer dollars in legal fees for that attack, trying to hold on to a ban that has ALREADY been found to be unconstitutional MANY TIMES.
Are you really wanting to defend the constitution? Are you really wanting smaller government control in your lives? Then stop supporting unconstitutional discrimination against same sex couples.
Maybe they need to set up those magic velvet ropes that trip you when you try to jump over them at the theater - to create a marginal safe distance between the performers and the audience passing by? The public is unpredictable; you cannot rely on their education, their dignity, their respectfulness or their respectability.
@ Jamey Honaker no sir, you still have your legal right to think as you wish, to hate as you wish, to preach fear and hate from the law of Moses and lie to your self and to others and pretend that hate came from God as your excuse.
The NDO would just make it illegal for you to deny civil rights to homosexual people, to discriminate against us in business, in housing, employment and public accommodations.
@ Dave McGrath the Idaho State Constitution does mention God, in the preamble:
We, the people of the State of Idaho,
grateful to Almighty God for our freedom...
And SECTION 4. GUARANTY OF RELIGIOUS LIBERTY is certainly worth reading too.
There is no question that within the Idaho state constitution, there exists a bias toward certain religious beliefs, and also attacks, both direct and indirect upon some of the acts of certain religions, specifically against the polygamy of Mormonism.
Idaho also currently has the luxury of interpreting the word 'licentiousness' in any way that it suits them politically. Perhaps some amendments are in order.
So in addition to the paranoid separatist gun nuts who have wet dreams of being revolutionaries, Idaho must also cope with police playing urban commando. These military surplus vehicles being used in the city area only make sense is the city is under some sort of military level attack. Since the local crime statistics almost never include terrorist or wartime enemy combatant reports, it should make people seriously question how the police are spending their budget.
Please just buy them all game consoles and let them play Call of Duty? They can use the game controller skills to pilot the police drones.
