A couple of comments have rightly pointed out that this isn't about Senator Crapo's religion. But they miss the point if they insist that this is all about drinking and driving. The big issue here is lack of integrity - pretending to be something you're not. Idaho is 25% LDS and he claims to be a faithful member of the LDS Church. But he is not. This is like former professor Ward Churchill. A political activist, he was a professor of ethnic studies at the University of Colorado and claimed American Indian ancestry. He was fired after it was discovered he was a fraud. The affair was not just an issue between Churchill and the Indian tribes he falsely claimed to be a member of - it was a matter of integrity of concern to the entire state of Colorado.
Yes, drinking and driving is a serious offense and we need to keep those people off the road. But to me it is living a lie that makes a person unqualified for the public trust.
