Alive After Five: Duke Robillard with Dan Costello

Robillard is considered one of truly gifted guitar players of all time, a title made all the more impressive when you know the likes of B.B. King and Tom Waits are some of the people who feel that way about the blues musician.

Even at a young age, Robillard's musical exploits were turning heads in clubs up and down the East Coast. The Roomful of Blues, Robillard’s high school band that he co-founded in 1967, brought and continues to bring in listeners in search of old style blues with a modern twist.

As a soloist, Robillard has released a whole host of albums, including the highly acclaimed Duke’s Blues on independent Canadian label Stony Plain. He has lent his skills as an accompanist on countless other records and has even contributed his talents to other bands—Robillard was a member of The Fabulous Thunderbirds.

Although Robillard is now in his his mid-60s, he hasn’t let his success get to him. He still plays like he’s in his 20s and is still very much living on the road, playing more than 250 shows a year. Recently, during some rare downtime, Robillard found pleasure in graphic design, photography and producing after constructing a 24-track studio in his home.
