Annual Auction for the Rivers Next Week

Each year, Idaho Rivers United collects an intense line-up of river-related gear and goods for auction as a benefit for the organization's pocketbook. Each year, the total haul gets bigger and bigger.

"In the last three years, we've doubled our proceeds every year," said Jessica Hixson, spokesperson for Idaho Rivers United. "We raised $32,000 last year and we're hoping to make this year's auction our biggest yet."

Among the items up for bid is a whitewater raft from AIRE, a Wilderness Systems touring kayak from Idaho River Sports, and several adventure trips, including a week's stay in Akumal, Mexico, a journey down the middle fork of the Salmon with Mackay Wilderness River Trips and a week of boating and paddling in Costa Rica.

This year's auction, with more than 100 items for raffle and silent auction, marks the 11th year of the Auction for the Rivers. All proceeds raised from successful bids directly fund wilderness and river protection programs currently under campaign by IRU.

According to Hixson, current IRU projects include helping to protect salmon and steelhead, designating Owyhee rivers as protected wild scenic areas, preventing mine construction in Atlanta and fighting for environmental protection parameters to be written into the new Hell's Canyon licensing agreement of the dam complex.

The 11th Annual Auction for the Rivers takes place Sat., Dec. 3, 6:30 p.m. at the Boise Train Depot. IRU members $15, $20 for non-members. For information, call 343-7481 or visit
