As Goes Tamarack, So Goes Team?

Change may be in store for the Tamarack bike racing team.

The team has been sponsored by Tamarack Resort, which is in the middle of major financial upheaval just now. First the company filed for bankruptcy protection earlier this year. That was after it announced it was more than $300 million in debt. The resort owes more than $262 million to Credit Suisse, which is asking courts to allow them to foreclose on the resort.

None of which makes it easy to keep throwing money at a bike racing team. "Due to current financial circumstances, we are exploring the various alternate ways we can continue to support Team Tamarack," said Ken Rider, Tamarack's director of sales and marketing.

Team Tamarack is, according to the team Web site, eight men and six women, all racing professionally under the Tamarack banner. They include several local bike racers, who have racked up numerous wins in mountain-bike and road-racing competitions.

"The team has done a spectacular job in regional and national competition," Rider said. "They have represented not just Tamarack, but the state of Idaho, extremely well through their athletic endeavors and achievements."

The other title sponsor from last year is Micron Technology, which isn't a happy camper in the finance department either. Spokesman Dan Francisco said Micron won't be contributing to the team this year.
