Ben's Crow Inn was an East Boise destination for nearly 70 years and when its most recent owners, Ben and Connie Hamilton, decided in fall 2015 to step away from the business, their first thought was another restaurateur would step in and keep the doors of the landmark open.

According to developers, a number of possible owners expressed interest in the location, but improvements to the building and premises were too costly. Ultimately, DevCo Real Estate Development, which has already brought subdivisions to other Treasure Valley locations, stepped in with an idea to build so-called "Tahoe Homes" on the site of Ben's Crow Inn.

Tahoe Homes were previously approved by the city and have been built in two other East Boise neighborhoods: Elevation Ridge—adjacent to Columbia Village—and Triplett Ranch in Barber Valley.

DevCo said it needs the city of Boise to re-annex the property to accommodate 24 lots on 4.2 acres on East Warm Springs Avenue. The homes would range from 2,300 to 2,800 square feet.

East Boise neighbors, many of them homeowners in Barber Valley, packed a three-hour Boise Planning and Zoning meeting in April, pushing back against the development. Many said they still hoped another restaurant or some other commercial interest would inhabit the location where Ben's Crow Inn now sits dark.

P&Z commissioners couldn't come to an agreement, ending in a tie vote on the annexation request. In effect, they kicked the can down the road to the Boise City Council. The council will take up the proposed housing development Tuesday, July 12, when the line item is expected to generate a fair amount of public testimony.
