Local Bench icon Betty the Washer is back on the job after being out of commission since December.

The repairs Betty received were thanks to new ownership of the building and a community effort to raise money for the project.

According to Cucina Di Paolo owner Paul Di Paolo, the sign received major repairs from a Boeing engineer who equipped Betty with aircraft-grade machinery. The upgrade is expected to keep her washing for the next 10 years.

“It is amazing, absolutely amazing, the people that come by with stories about her and to take pictures of her,” said co-owner Mary Jean Di Paolo. “There’s a crazy love about this sign. Its great, there’s such a community presence about her.”

Mary Jean said Betty will feature a new outfit each month and will be showcased in a calendar at the end of the year. The proceeds from calendar sales will be donated to the Idaho Foodbank.

“We’re really thankful the community in Boise came out and supported us with donations to put her back together with such a community driven love for her,” Paul said. “We just happen to be a restaurant in Betty’s parking lot. She owns us.”
