Boise State's Theatre Arts Department Plays Around

Student-penned play opens the season

The Boise State Department of Theatre Arts kicks off its 2009-2010 season tomorrow night by keeping it in the family.

The first play of the season, A Question of Grace, was written by Boise State Theatre Arts student Bernadine Cockey. Grace is the story of Grace, a young mother accused of infanticide, and Sarah, Grace's reluctant public defender.

With a season that includes productions from Shakespeare, Terrence McNally and adaptations of the works by Ovid and Sinclair Lewis, Cockey's play may seem a bit out of place. But in reality, works on a number of levels.

"The first production of the season needs to be the tightest," said Richard Klautsch, department chair and director of Grace. (You may recognize Klautsch from his work with the Idaho Shakespeare Festival and Boise Contemporary Theater.) "Bernie has been a student of ours for years," he said. "Last spring, she asked us to take a look at this play and consider producing it. [As a theater arts student], having one of her plays produced was her primary goal."

Theater Arts department faculty members took at look at Grace and found it worthy of further development and in line with their play selection policy.

"In any four-year period, we're trying to offer as eclectic and varied a selection of plays as possible," Klautsch said. "We want to makes sure students have exposure to Shakespeare, they'll have exposure to Ovid and, yes, they'll have exposure to Bernie," Klautsch said laughing.

Productions are staged in the Danny Peterson Theatre at the Morrison Center. A Question of Grace opens Thursday, Oct. 1 and runs through Sunday, Oct. 4, and Wednesday, Oct. 7-11. Tickets are $15 for adults; $12 for non-Boise State students, Boise State alumni, military personnel and seniors; $9 each for groups of 10 or more; and FREE for Boise State Students with I.D.
