Melissa Auf der Maur, former bassist for Hole (Courtney Love's brainchild) and the final bassist for Smashing Pumpkins on their farewell tour, releases her first solo album in the United States on June 1. The album has already been released internationally, titled simply Auf der Maur. The disc features 12 original tracks with backing from former members of Kyuss and other bands Auf der Maur has collaborated with in the past. She describes the sound of the album as "romantic heavy rock." After taking a break from touring in 2000, she began writing the album, without even considering taking it to a record company. When she completed it, she took all the money she had made and took the music to the studio. The result is an incredible testament to modern rock. Auf der Maur is a sensual, romantic, edgy tribute to the diverse bands Auf der Maur has been involved with. Her voice is soothing, with a sexy rasping edge to it; the music is undulating and beautiful and at times slithers next to caustic.
