Clap Your Hands Say Yeah!

Okay, so I'm a little slow on the uptake. I kept hearing about CYHSY all over the place, Tiny Mix Tapes, Pitchdork, and even NPR until I finally caved and listened to a track on my girlfriend's computer. What I heard prompted me to go buy the album from Record Exchange immediately. CYHSY is a rock band in the same way that the Beatles were a rock band. Sure they both have guitars, drums, and bass, but the music has no bite. It's soft, warm, and easy to digest–a yummy treat. The opening track of the album is very Sgt. Peppers-esque, but that is the only musical comparison I would draw to the Beatles. What stands out to me is vocalist Alec Ounsworth's voice, which sounds like a mix of Tom Verlaine's (Television) uncontrolled vocal style and the lispy delivery of Isaac Brock (Modest Mouse). The music is very melodic and quirky with a variety of instruments to keep it interesting. What stands out about the band even more than their music is their DIY approach. CYHSY is testament to what can be accomplished with a great album and good old grassroots word of mouth. This album was self-produced, self-realeased, self-promoted and self-distributed. If you are a fan of Neutral Milk Hotel, Talking Heads, Arcade Fire, Modest Mouse and the like, then you are certain to adore CYHSY. If you live in Boise and wish to catch them live, they will be at the Sasquatch Music Festival this year, but that's as close as they'll get to us.
