Cobra Starship, Feb. 7, The Big Easy

When it comes to young new band names, it's fashionable to appropriate a headline, a line from a song or the name of a character in such a way that it's often long, grammatically cumbersome, includes funky punctuation or is impossible to Google. Fueled By Ramen Records is home to many such bands, and although their monikers follow these naming conventions—Fall Out Boy (a band of four), The Academy Is... (ellipsis included) and label alumni Jimmy Eat World to name a few—their music is arranged, sung and played well enough that even some of us old codgers are loading it on our iPods for when we go speed-walking through the mall.

FBR's Cobra Starship is one of those bands producing music that begs the question "What's in a name?" especially after hearing they're on the The Really, Really Ridiculously Good Looking Tour. Snakes on a Plane, Grace Slick and Blue Steel references aside, this high-energy fivesome is creating music similar to that of their labelmates Panic! At The Disco (who I believe have dropped the !). It's poppy, punchy and irreverent, and the literal lyrics leave little room for interpretation: "Here's how it goes, it's about who you know / if you got money, you get in for free / get on your knees, if you want to reach the top." Their sophomore release, Viva Cobra!, is full of angsty messages laid over dance-punk sounds that will have you practically running through Boise Towne Square.
