MORE THAN JUST TOAST
Some times you want to go ... where everybody knows your name. There's a new kid on Boise's hottest downtown restaurant block and it's just the kind of place where you'd be proud to proclaim yourself a regular.
The space on Idaho Street where The Falcon Tavern calls home may have been many things in the past, but with Dale Krick (yes, as in brother of Dave Krick--Bittercreek/Red Feather/Reef guru and arguably Boise's most knowledgeable downtown restaurateur) at the helm of this newly-varnished pub, we have high hopes that it wil live long and prosper.
The menu offers pretty standard burger/sandwich/salad pub fare but doesn't neglect to sneak in a few subtle touches and pleasant surprises. The leg of lamb sandwich with homemade au jus has a fan club following, we carnivorous types here at Boise Weekly are pretty keen on the finger steaks (as the once standard menu item is becoming an endangered species in other downtown eateries) and if you can keep a secret we'll give you the three-word down low on why the burgers are so damn good: Kobe beef blend.
Expect to part with about four GWs for a beer or an appetizer and about seven for a sandwich or salad. You'll find smiling and helpful faces behind the bar Monday through Saturday between 11 a.m. until close.

After months of enticing Boise drivers with bright billboards boasting skewered and caloric-laden sauce-dipped goodies, The Melting Pot--Boise's first fondue franchise--opened its doors on Tuesday, June 15.
Daring us to "Dip Into Something Different," The Melting Pot promises an atmosphere that we hope can be true to its guarantee of being the kind of place you'd take a date for a romantic dinner or the meeting point for a large group looking for a family-friendly experience.
With fine wine, four fondue-cooking styles, and enough cheese and chocolate to permanently destroy any Atkins allegiance, The Melting Pot is located at 200 N. 6th St. in the Historic Central Fire Station in Old Boise on the corner of 6th and Idaho streets. To make reservations call 383-0900.
During a rare and a recent Boise Weekly lunchtime jailbreak, we--the editorial staff--snagged a table at already-known-for-being-a-cool-and-swanky-casual-hangout Reef.
Though even the Spanish-savvy diners at our table were at a loss to pronounce or translate much of the menu, we found help in a very knowledgeable and brightly-dressed server. The tropical-themed bar and restaurant has a Cancun attitude that almost convinces an imbiber of too many spicy Mexican lemonades that the blue view from the second-floor windows is the inviting Pacific instead of the dusty Idaho sky.
A rooftop patio is in the making and is rumored to open within the next few weeks. Friday nights are thumping with neo-primitive Island Fusion drumming. This week features Matt McCarter, Benjamin Pursley and Rick Thomson on the stage.
Reef opens at 11 a.m. Monday through Friday and 4 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. They'll stay open until 2 a.m. if there are bodies bellied up but quash your food needs by midnight. Lunch is served until 3 p.m. and dinner starts at 5 p.m. seven nights a week.
