More Dish on The Dish

OK, here's the final word on The Dish. Wesley Harris, owner of the bar next to The Dish, Montego Bay, has made a move to purchase and manage The Dish, with the help of investor Vicki Rice, under the corporation Palm Incorporated. Harris, a good friend of current head chef/owner of The Dish, Jared Couch, says Couch will stay on to train the top line chef at the Dish, Peter Troy, who has been at The Dish since the beginning. Troy has in-depth culinary experience, having graduated from Boise State's culinary school and worked for fine Boise restaurants like Desert Sage, Richard's and 1002. Couch is so confident in Troy's ability to run The Dish that Couch will allow the name to remain the same as long as Troy stays on board. Harris says of the whole transition, "There is no sense in trying to recreate a wheel that works so well."

Java comes to those who wait

Ketchum-based coffee shop and breakfast purveyor "Java" will open its first Boise branch over a month later than originally planned, according to owner Todd Rippo. "Instead of early May, it's going to be more like mid-June," Rippo explains, citing conflicts stemming from the shop's location in the historic Eagles Building at the corner of Sixth and Idaho Streets as the major obstacle. "What we do is a little different than anything that the city is used to seeing, so the city didn't quite know how to classify us," Rippo says. "Sure, we're a coffee house, but we also bake things from scratch and make breakfast all day. But now, we're finally on our way and excited to get open."

Boise's Java will be the fourth statewide that Rippo has opened, and will feature the same small-batch coffees, unique breakfast dishes and casual décor that has kept the Ketchum version thriving despite its close proximity to chain-shops like Starbucks and Tully's. Rippo plans to have a quiet opening by the end of June before holding a grand opening event later in the summer when the shop is "running at its peak."

A Chefs' Affaire 2004 on June 11

The sixth annual Chefs' Affaire will receive a tasteful makeover this year. Instead of sampling from a variety of Boise's favorite restaurants, chefs from 20 different restaurants will team up to prepare a five-course meal for attendees.

Each year A Chefs' Affaire dishes up gourmet eats to raise money for the Idaho Foodbank and its Chefs to the Rescue prepared food recovery program.

The most popular events during A Chefs' Affaire will not change. Idaho wines will still be served with each course, participating chefs will be auctioned off to prepare a feast for four to 10 people at the winner's home, and a silent auction will include dining packages, merchandise and services from area restaurants.

Steve Eaton will provide the entertainment for the evening and Scott Dorval of KIVI 6 On Your Side will emcee the event.

A Chefs' Affaire, June 11, 6:30 p.m., Boise Centre on the Grove. Tickets purchased in advance are $55 per person or $100 per couple through Select-a-Seat Outlets, all participating restaurants and The Idaho Foodbank. Tickets are available at the door for $58.
