Local photographer John Shinn's images have been described as "leftovers from the Instagram feed." His exhibition, New Light, now at Ming Studios, is comprised of photos that, however banal, give pause.
Shinn is aware of their instinctive tug.
"I think my photos succeed when people interpret them in a way you can't interact with them verbally," Shinn said at the Nov. 14 New Light
Snapped in Boise, the images alternate between having a Rockwellian, slice-of-life feel and seeing a snapshot from a waking dream. In one, a woman in a dowdy red dress watches a child playing in a river; in another, two trees—fleetingly, it seems—frame downtown Boise's Imperial Plaza on a sun-washed summer day.
is Shinn's first solo exhibition and is supported by a grant from the Idaho Commission on the Arts. Ultimately, Shinn and Ming Studios Founder and Executive Director Jason Morales hope the photos will be exhibited internationally.
is on display at Ming Studios through Saturday, Jan. 9, 2016.
