Summer sipping • Red Chicken lays a chocolate egg

Summer sipping

It's not summer 'til your car overheats, your AC bill skyrockets and you unwittingly step barefoot in the remnants of some kid's fallen sno-cone. Since all the above have already happened to me, I declare it officially summer and therefore time for some relaxing downtime at inaugural annual beer garden at Smoky Mountain Pizza. The beer extravaganza lasts all day from 12 to 8 p.m. at the outdoor patio of the Smoky Mountain Pizza location on State. Twenty-four premier beers on tap will be featured alongside the BBQ pit selling burgers and hotdogs. With plenty of shade and comfortable seating, the beer garden will be be ideal for hanging out for the afternoon while being entertained by nine different musicians including Tim Rice, Ben Burdick, Gentle, Audra Connelly and Paula Baille. "It's kinda been my brain-child," says Nathan Lawson, event coordinator. "I've been planning for a year and a half and I've always wanted to do it." Even if your car doesn't overheat and stall directly in front of the restaurant, meander on down to check out the cover-free chance to throw back a few.

FREE, Saturday, 12-8 p.m., Smoky Mountain, 1805 W. State, 859-0528.

Red Chicken lays a chocolate egg

Le Poulet Rouge, currently serving savory breakfasts and lunches, announces the opening of a bakery as well. Desserts, freshly baked breads, apple bread pudding and the restaurant's claim to fame-baked fudge-will be sold in abundance at the bakery, which opens daily at 7 a.m.. Custom-made cakes can be ordered as well for all event-planning needs. Wednesday is half-price dessert day, a noteworthy tip as the selections are wickedly wonderful and even more so at half the price.

Le Poulet Rouge Bakery, 106 N. 6th St., 343-6215.
