While Boise firefighters logged fewer calls on the Fourth of July holiday (including some calls that stretched into the pre-dawn hours of July 5), the proportion of those calls reporting fires was significantly higher this year.
The Boise Fire Department responds to approximately 22,000 calls per year, averaging about 60 calls a day. On July 4, however, the department received 74 calls, compared to 83 calls on July 4, 2015 and 91 calls on July 4, 2014.
Of those 74 calls to the department, 21 were fires—that's compared to only eight fires on July 4, 2015 and 12 fires on July 4, 2014. Equally disturbing was that of those 21 fires, 17 were caused by fireworks. That's a considerable jump from the seven fireworks-related fires on July 4, 2015 and nine fireworks-related fires in Boise on July 4, 2014.
